Connecting single back speaker to Denon AVR-2308CI?

I am working on setting up my system and have decided to go with a single back speaker. The manual for my Denon AVR-2308CI receiver says that when using a single back speaker to hook it up to the back left channel output. I guess that answers my question before I even ask it, but does that sound right to you? I would have imagined I'd need to hook it up to both left and right. Guess not.

Just looking for some confirmation that what the manual is telling me makes sense.

Thanks!

Yes, that sounds right.

Trust me, the receiver is smarter than either of us here.

Simply follow the connections and procedures described in the manual when setting it up.

Then you can connect it to both of the rear channels.

Thanks, guys. I already have the back speaker, an Axiom QS8, so no dual voice coil. But thanks for the feedback. Seems to be working fine.

How do you like your Denon avr-2308Cl? I'm looking at getting this or maybe just going with a Yamaha v661. Any pros or cons on the Denon?

Thanks

Well I don't know if I'm the best to review it for you because I am rather new at all this home theater stuff and really have nothing to compare it to. I am replacing an old Sony stereo system that is over 15 years old and was much simpler. Some stuff has changed :)

It seems to do everything I need it to do, so no complaints on features from me. Seems to sound fantastic, so no complaints there. I suppose the one thing I'm a little less than impressed with is simply "ease of use". I think both the user interface and the manual leave a bit to be desired. It's so feature rich (from my perspective) that it would really help me to have a more intuitive UI. I mean, it's hooked up to a huge beautiful HDTV, yet they didn't bother to take advantage of that with a rich thoughtful on-screen GUI. Just crude simple text with nested menu after nested menu. The thing should have enough horsepower for a smart UI that would help even a dufus like me set the thing up to do whatever I need it to do. Instead I've spent more time than I'd like trying to understand the confusing set up menus and settings.

In hindsight, this is one thing I wish I'd researched a bit more. I have no idea if the Yamaha is any better in this regard.

That's just my perspective. "Your results may vary."

Thanks for the insight. I have definitely heard and read that the UI has much to be desired and Denon's new GUI doesn't kick in until you get the higher models. One thing that has bothered me is that varying sources say that the 2308CI supports Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD, when even the manufacturer says it doesn't. That was one of the main reasons i was looking at it over the Yamaha V661. Any thoughts?

Also, how is the 2308 working with HDMI pass through and upconversion? I have read it has problems with HDCP "handshake" from Blu Ray and DVD sources because of copyright protection.

Thanks!!
