Toshiba sets are some of the only units out there that I would suggest an ISF calibration on, for sure. They tend to have all of the service menu settings at "0", meaning Toshiba did not even try to make the set perform it's best from the factory. That is what I have found from many reviews out there anyway.

In any case, get yourself an Avia or Avia II set up DVD. Not only will you learn something, but you will properly set up the television to it's best in the process.

Yeah I owned one for 2 months before it broke and I ended up returning it for a Panasonic Plasma. Their picture settings out of the box are completely out of whack and depending on the set the colormaster settings will not be enough to get it running right. I had to go into the service on mine to adjust some things along with colormaster settings but it was still not perfect. Depending on your specific set something like AVIA or DVE will be all you need and with others only ISF will do.

It coulda been a contender! I had the 47HL167 for 29 days and returned it at the 11th hour. Because of Toshiba's unwillingness to even set-up a baseline setting in the service menu many of the sets have a green push that is most noticeable when images that should be black end up green. Dark shadowy scenes or black/dark grey clothing on actors would have a green hue that I could not exorcise. Toshiba's service menu is crazy too. All the settings are in something akin to hexadecimal so it can be very hard to determine if you're moving the settings up or down.

With that said, one user opted to get an ISF calibration and the guy was able to get rid of the green, but it took a lot of going back between the service menu and the user menu so I don't think it's even possible to fix within the user menu alone. However, you may bet it to where it's suitable for you.

In my case, I was comparing Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End on the Toshiba(had watched it numerous times in a short timespan) to the same movie on my parent's 47" Vizio and could clearly see how different the colors were.

I owned the 52LX177 which is slightly newer than the HL models. I never saw green push as it was described where dark scenes have a greenish tint to them. The only green anomaly I saw was when something black was right next to flourescent green the black would become green; eg. Rambo's black hair became green for a second when his head was next to the flourescent green instrument panel. That was probably an issue with the video processor doing a poor job with a complex scene but in no way was a dealbreaker since it occurred so rarely.

I returned it because I had other reservations like size for my viewing distance and grainy SD performance. I wanted to return it within my 30 day window and see if I could do better with a different brand or model. Well after seeing the Sharp in person at a friend's house I could clearly see the banding so it's out. The Sony looked ok to me too but it has other issues (as do they all).

I've pretty much concluded that I will get another Toshiba but I may wait a month or so and see the new models coming out before I decide to get another LX or the new one.

What about a plasma MDS? Have you though about a nice Panny plasma? BTW you didn't happen to buy your LX at A&B TV in Austin did you?

No I didn't buy from A&B because they won't even let you play with the remote. The salesman actually told me he'd get in 'trouble' if he let me. Apparently you're supposed to pick one just by looking at it high on the wall.

That and they charge a 10% restocking fee if you want to return it just because you aren't satisifed. I'm not so price conscious that I'd patronize a place like that just to save a few bucks. As it turns out, Crutchfield was actually cheaper anyway given no tax and free shipping. I had no issue whatsoever returning my set to Crutchfield and will buy the next one there too.

I've looked at the Plasmas since everyone suggests them but I'm still not sold. I was reasonably happy with the Toshiba LX save for its few minor shortcomings and I think I'll stick with LCD - maybe not for the usual 5-8 years that I tend to keep a TV but in that time frame or less the technology should improve vastly.

Yeah I really don't know how they are still in business by the way their sales people act. That and they have the Studio 60 and 100 speakers being powered by a very low end Pioneer AVR. The room where they have the 40's is good but the one with the 60 and 100 is just a mess. Also the sales guy told my friend and I that they don't sell NHT anymore because they are "crap" even though it is listed on their website.

A&B is apparently an authorized dealer for Jamo and NHT but the catch i that theu don't have any in stock. If you already know which model you want they can order them for youl A lot of good that does. The only speakers they actually have on hand are Paradigm.
