Is this a good $1000 HT setup?

My dad has been asking to find him a HT setup for around $1000. So in my searching this is what I have come up with. Let me know what you think, and/or if you have any other suggestions. It is a med-large room, HDMI not necessary, would like to stay away from a stand alone self-powered sub. Going along side a 57 inch widescreen Sony projection tv without HDMI, only component. If I know my dad, he wont be buying another tv for another 20 years...lol. Anyway...here is what i was thinking

Receiver: Yamaha RX-V659
Front: Yamaha NS-777
Center: Yamaha NS-C444
Rear: Yamaha NS-333

Thanks everyone!

Yamaha makes very good AVRs and the 659 is a powerhouse.

Yamaha does not make very good speakers and you can do better than that.

Agreed. It sounds like your dad is the type that won't bother auditioning speakers. If that's the case, are there any considerations for the speakers? For example, does he want towers, bookshelves, satellites, etc... I'll throw the av123 speakers in the mix as they're excellent speakers for the money. Or the PSB Image line which is on sale at Saturday Audio for a really great price.

Speakers for $1000 without sub? Or receiver, and speakers?

$1000 for receiver and speakers w/o sub

We are looking for a 5 speaker system, 5.1 if we must resort to that, Towers up front, bookshelf/statellites for rear. Iv heard that a couple times about the av123's, ill have to check um out.

Thanks all for the info, yami' speakers are going out the window.

You could do really well with BIC speakers for the money.

You should consider getting a powered sub...

This setup should run about $500.
So BIC makes nice stuff? or its just cheap? Im going to try to do without the sub for now, as I think there will be enough without it. Im sure you all are shaking your heads right now, and im just stubborn, ill have to see for myself. THANKS!

I have the BIC DV62-CLRS for a center channel. I have put it up against a Polk and PSB center costing almost 3 times as much. They were good, but not three times better. BIC is very good bang for the buck and will allow you to get a sub.

Try the Parts Express Sub-120 for a bargain sub that will do ok.

A 57" TV without a decent sub should be blasphemous.:p (OOPS, I went without for 9 years)

I agree, but I must be committing one of the biggest sins of them all, a 92" front projection with no sub. Of course, I'm waiting to get the best sub I can before I pull the trigger. It will be worth the wait. But yes, some things just should not be.

Ok...so unless I can convince my dad to hand over the money for AV123's or others, it looks like we are probably going to go with the BIC's. Is there a reason you recommended the DV64 instead of the DV84 other than price? Also, what is a good, reliable, website or store to buy the BIC's?

Thanks

PS. Does anybody know how the 'satin black' finish looks like on the Encore line?

With a sub there is a reduced need for the DV84's. General consensus is that the 6.5" drivers in the DV64's will be a tighter/controlled/articulate whatever than the larger ones in the DV84.

I would get the DV64's and use the difference toward a sub. We are talking about getting the best job done for the $$ spent. This is the way I would go.

Thanks guys for all your help, I think this is what we are going to go with:

Receiver: Yamaha RX-V659
Front: BIC DV-64
Center: BIC DV-62CLRS
Rear: BIC DV-62SI
Sub: V1020

Total should come out to around $1050 with the receiver

Afterwards I may go to Ed Frias for modification if we feel it is necessary

Thanks again

You owe it to yourself to check out the SUB-120 from Parts Express. It's 12" instead of 10" sub. Either way I think you will be fine. Aren't you tired that we do nothing but endlessly tweak and critique setups?:D

lol yea, na its ok I appreciate it. Honestly, I havent seen too many reviews on that sub, and i like the fact that the BIC has a matching finish for roughly the same price. I will see if i can find further reviews on either of them.

After searching the reviews, I'v found some disappointing news about the materials that make up the Dayton. While the BIC V1020 appears to be fairly promising. Thanks again for all your help, I know my dad will be pleasantly surprised when he hears everything put together.

Hey Headstrong,
Nothing against the Yammy. It is a nice receiver and has gotten excellent reviews. But given your limited budget, I would go for the Marantz over the Yammy. It has a few features the Yammy doesn't including a learning remote and HDMI. It's something to consider, since you can pick up a refurb for half the price of the Yammy and put that $200 into a better sub or speakers. I believe the retail for the Marantz is around $600. Keep checking Ubid. it still comes with a full warranty: http://www.ubid.com/Marantz_SR4001_560W_A/V_7.1_Ch._Home_Theater_Receiver/a11226587-rsearchone.html

Just something to consider. :)
