Can't control audio receiver volume, tried everything

Hi guys,

So I just got a new Samsung LNT4671F and it's great, but for some reason I can't get it to work with my NAD receiver the way my old tv did. The receiver was working fine with my last regular tube tv, and I literally just took the rca's out of the back of that tv and stuck them in the back of the Samsung without moving the connection on the NAD receiver at all. Also, with my old TV, I didn't even have to turn the receiver on, the sound just came out of the speakers.

Now I have the RCA's coming out of the left and right outs of the TV and going to the main in's on the back of the receiver. The sound comes out UNBELIEVABLY loud and and you can't control the volume on the receiver, receiver remote, tv volume, or cable volume. It's crazy. I tried using every other in on the back of the receiver, and every rca input and output on the tv. I've also played with the tv's settings and nothing. What could possibly be wrong?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

It sounds like you are using what they call "fixed" auddio outputs on the your TV. This means that the TV's volume control has no effect on them.

If this is the case, you need to dfeed them into an "auxillary" input on your receiver and you will use the receiver's controls to adjust the volume.

If, when you say you are feeding them into a "main ins" in your receiver, do you mean the ones next to the "pre outs"? If so, believe these are after the volume controls. You would be running flat out, which is what you seem to be describing.

Clear, readable pictures of the backs of the units and/or links to the manuals would help.

You must somehow be connecting to your receiver after the preamp and connecting straight to the amp stage. What happens when you connect the TV outs to a CD or tuner input? Secondly does the sound go down if you turn the volume down all the way? If the sound goes off if you turn the volume down all the way, then the TV output is too hot for your receiver, and you will need in line attenuators.

I tried plugging in to all of the other inputs like aux, CD, and whatever else is back there. I don't have a manual for the NAD 7000, I inherited it. It's just odd how everything worked fine before with the old tv going into the mains on the receiver, without the receiver being on. Ideally, I'd like to be able to set it up like that again.

The volume on the receiver doesn't work at all. The tv/cable volume only increases and decreases the sound coming out of the tv speakers.

Thanks for your help guys, this is frustrating and I want to figure it out

If you plug the CD player into the CD input, I assume the volume control works. Is that correct? If that is so, then the TV is sending far to high a voltage signal.

NADs are British designs and the inputs are designed for 250 to 500 mv inputs usually. Much of this modern gear like your new TV can have outputs as high as 5 Volts or even greater. Does your TV state the output voltage from the RCA jacks you are using in the specs in the manual. If it does I will tell you what sort of in line attenuator you need between your TV and the NAD.

These forums are a bit like playing Stump the Chump on Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers. But I think it is highly likely this is your problem.

The inputs are phono, video, cd, tape 1, tape 2, pre out, main in, i just shimmied myself back there to check it out. I don't have an aux input, is that the same as phono?

I can't find the output voltage, I've been googling around and it doesn't seem to be listed, the manual says it's 10Wx2

Is that the output spec for the audio out on the TV. If it is, it is intended to connect to speakers. That would be most unusual. What is the high impedance audio out from your TV? 10 watts means it provides 10 watts of power. You can not connect that to a receiver

Do not use the phono input. This is for turntables and is a very low voltage and high sensitivity, that also applies equalization to the RIAA curve. Do not use that one. You can use any of the others.

I can tell this is an older unit, so I suspect the input is in the 250 mv range and might be only 100 mv. A lot of the older British gear was as low as 100 mv.

Ok thanks again. Will I be able to control the volume at all using this? I did leave the audio on at the super loud volume to see if anything i did affected the sound.

Also, I just put my ear right up to the speaker with the tv outs going to the "phono" input in the stereo, and with phono selected on the receiver, and I could hear the audio coming through, very softly, but again unaffected by any volume control.

As I said the phono input is the only one you can't use. Try one of the tape inputs.

I have it plugged into tape 1's input and still nothing. this is really odd
Is there more than one tape input? If so the receiver may have a 'tape monitor' loop. If that is on, you'd hear no sound.

All you should have to do is connect the audio outs of the TV to any one of the line-level inputs (cd, tape, etc, and as noted NOT phono). Some TVs require you to turn off the TV speakers before it will send the audio out its audio out jacks, but I'd bet the issue is the tape monitor being on.

There was more than one tape input. I took the rca's out of that and put them in the CD inputs, but there's no sound coming out of the speakers.

I think the tv outs are sending the signal out as i can get it to come out of the speakers but i can't control the volume

You have me confused now. Your original post said the sound was too loud. Now you say you have nothing. Which is it? You have to give the greatest detail if you want help with a problem and we can't look at it.

Now I downloaded your TV manual. You need to connect to the RCA line level outputs. Those are the two RCA jacks in the highest position on the left below HDMI.

http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/EM/200708/20070813174556531/EN/4_sub.htm

Look under Connecting an Amplifier/DVD Home Theater. Those are the outputs you need.

If your tape monitor loop is off it will work with any inputs except phono. If it is too loud then you need the attenuators I sent you the link to. That is all there is to it.

If you can't sort it out now, then you need someone competent in the home to see it.

I said the sound was too loud when it was attached to the mains

the above post says it is now attached to the cd input, and therefore no sound

It's been in the top left line level outs the whole time, but sound won't come out of the speakers if i plug it in cd, video, tape 1, or tape 2. Sound only comes out if i plug it in to the "main" inputs on the receiver, and that's when it is too loud and i am unable to adjust it.

I don't know if this helps at all, but I found the NADS 7000 booklet http://207.228.230.231/info/NAD_7100.pdf
What do you mean by plugged into thee mains? What do you mean by this. Does this receiver by chance have pre outs that have to be connected by jumpers to connect to the amp section?

More questions. Can you now hear the radio through you speakers? Can you play a CD through the CD inputs?

Did you remove metal jumpers when you connected your TV to what you call mains?

If the answer to the first two questions is YES you are likely in the wrong TV sockets.

If the answer to first two questions is no AND to the last YES, then put back the jumpers.

That last link was of little help.
