Heres my story...

i am thinking of buying a decent home theater speakers with a receiver. Found 2-3 HTiB on amazon.com by Pioneer and Yamaha. According to my research, there is so little you can do in a HTiB. and the sound quality is not that great according to some reviews.

So, i did some more research and considering of buying the following items.

Denon AVR-1707 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver and Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System

Is that a good combination? i am really newb in these kind of things. What would you guys recommend? my budget is aprox. $300~$600.

Does that price include the receiver and speaker system? My friend has a Polk speaker system, but it isn't that great. Maybe waiting and saving up for an Energy Take 5 or something along those lines would be better.

I think I would get the receiver and then either a pair of main speakers or just a center channel. That will allow you to get involved with better speakers within your budget. You can add speakers in the future as budget allows.

I have a neighbor who bought that Denon/Polk package. I set it up for her and found it to be somewhat pleasant. It's not going to knock anybody's socks off, but it gets the job done better than the HTIB's I've heard. I didn't really have enough time to evaluate it the way I would like, nor set it up beyond the "Yup, it works" phase, but I found no reason to say anything bad about it.

what is your listening prefernces? Do you have the ability to demo locally? I agree with fmw you can get better bang for your buck building up along with more enjoyment. B&W makes bookshelves that are under 425pair, coupled with a inexpensive yama or denon can achieve a wonderfull sound, I use two speakers in br and the depth and stage is large enough to compensate for the lack of a center channel.(unless you wanna go over budget a little)

If you could stretch your budget just a little, this would make a great entry lvl system, much better then any HTIB i know of: http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/speakers/satellite/energy-take-classic-review :)

If listening to music isn't a priority to you at all, at least not loud and clear, then I'd say throw down on the HTiB. I've listened to quite a few HTiB and they do fine for movies and tv. Granted, my Paradigms blow'em away, and so will any pair of good floorstanders/bookshelfs. But if you are used to listening to tv/movie audio off of your TV, my recommendation would be pick up the HTiB.

Once you start investing in quality audio equipment, you are not going to want to stop, and you wont ever want to go back. Not to mention you'll be pulling your hair out when you throw a party and drunk friends are getting uncomfortably close to expensive equipment.

Ignorance can be bliss, just remember that :D

It must be Friday because I can't rememebr what I just read on this thread ;)
Please excuse me if I'm repeating here but have you considered starting off witha receiver and 2 good quality speakers and building on that as budget allows? It'll take longer but in the long run, you'll be better off owning something that you feel may not need upgrading for a long time. :)
