Absinthe has been legal in Canada for a long time and is sold in gov't liquor stores. It wasn't actually illegal to possess in the States, just to sell. There weren't any criminal penalties for possession of Absinthe. Thujone is not a listed substance like cocaine, marijuana or a Cuban cigar.

What brand and style (Czech/French) was it?

I have two bottles at home.

La Muse Verte' French style I picked up last time I was in Paris. Very nice, drinkable, with good anise flavors.

Absinth from The Green Tree Distillery. Czech style I got in Canada. Might as well be drinking turpentine, no anise to speak of. No wonder the Czech have to start it on fire and stir the burnt sugar in to it their stuff is nasty.
