Where to place and how many speakers

I'm looking for suggestions on where to how many speakers to get and where to place them. I'm renovating the living/dining room. The 2 rooms are not separated. The total dimensions are 25.06’ x 9.06’. I’m looking for a background music configuration. I was thinking of 6 speakers. Is that too many? One in each corner and one in the middle of the room on each side. I was going to cable them for stereo, left and right. If 6 is the right number, would you cable them so one side of the 9.06’ is left and other side is right? Or would you alternate so one side would be RLR and other side LRL and the stereo effect would be diagonal?

Looking for any suggestions.

Thank you.

How big are the speakers and how loud will you play them? Your biggest issue will be time delays and speaker interference. The other question, are will there be a primary listening location? If these are small speakers that will just provide low level background and no serious listening, then I would wire for mono.

I'm looking at getting these speakers.

There will not be a primary listening location. They are mainly for low level background (radio and mp3s).
Six speakers will be fine. I strongly recommend using industrial practice for this application and wiring for mono, not stereo. Interference issues will be much less and intelligibility will be better.

Do you know how to wire them so the impedance will be correct and you do not blow amps?

Unfortunately, no. Is there any newbie and basic setup docs or links that you have?

I would suggest just 2 speakers for background music, in stereo. Simple and should be plenty for background only type. In the middle, 12.5 ft and separated about 7 ft on the ceiling. After all, it is background listening only.

Sorry to have ignored you for a day!

For back ground music I would use at least six, otherwise you won't have even coverage.

I have found this thread that may be useful.

http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38081&highlight=Speaker+impedance+matching

Anunaki made the point at the end of the thread that this type of system is best wired mono. I obviously agree as I made the same point.

Now you have two options if you want to use stereo, you can't balance the impedance without using eight speakers. The same will be true if you use mono and want to use both receiver channels.

If you use eight speakers you can select either stereo or mono, but using mono gives better results in these situations.

To do this connect the first two speaker in series. That means ONE positive of ONE speaker to ONE negative of the other. Do the same for the rear two on that side. Then connect the remaining positives and negatives together. The ones with no wires on yet. These last terminals will also be the connection to the amp. This is called series parallel connection. Do the same for the four on the other side.

Now if you want to wire for only mono and use only ONE set of speaker connections on your amp do this. Wire the two front left and right speakers in series, the middle ones in series and the rear ones as well. Then parallel the three sets of series connected speakers and connect to the output of one channel only. Leave your receiver set to mono.

I don't advise using just two speakers for your application. It will be above background near the fronts, and virtually imperceptible away from them. This is especially true as there is a noisy kitchen environment involved.

I hope this helps.
