I am thinking about upgrading my receiver. I currently have an Onkyo HT R530. It's 1000w 7.1 and I have a Polk Audio RM20 speaker set with 12 inch sub woofer. I have a PS3 and Blue Ray discs sound GREAT, but I am considering upgrading to the 705. I really want to hear the 705 before I buy it but NO stores have one that I can listen to. Those of you who own a 705, are you happy with it? If you had a surround set up before you bought the 705 is it WAY better? I am just trying decide if the money is worth it. Any info would be great. Thanks

What are your reasons for wanting to upgrade? Do you want the added features or are you just looking for a better sound? I don't think sonically you will notice much difference. If you just want better sound, get an amp and use the Onkyo you have as a preprocessor.

Unfortunately, I don't think that receiver has pre-outs to support an external amp.

Sdaz,
Considering the shipping weight on the R530 (according to Amazon anyway) is 15lbs it's hard to believe the stated 110 watts per channel is realistic.
The 705 would be a huge step up in features from that HTIB receiver. And most likely a healthy step up in sound as well.
In the end, however, the weak spot may be your speakers.
You may want to lower your budget on a receiver and set aside some money for new speakers down the line for the best overall results.

what about speakers? If your gonna upgrade, upgrade. Remember your systems is only as good as your weakest component. Good Luck

Actually, the 705 does have pre-outs. So it would be possible to get an external amp later on. However, speakers and room acoustics will make a much bigger difference in SQ than a different amp/reciever.

The receivers that Onkyo uses for their HTIB systems are near clones of the 5xx series. The 705 is THX Select2 certified and is a far beefier receiver with tons of features that are not included on the 5 series models.

My bad, I realize now you meant the Onkyo HTIB reciever :)
