DVD for playing CDs?

I already have a cd player but was thinking it would be good to have one in my exercise room instead of the old tape deck which connects to my old NAD receiver. Then I got to thinking, why not use a sleek dvd player instead of a cd player. I know that I can play cds in a dvd player... I've done it myself, but the cd plays only when I have my tv on. I tried hooking up the dvd player to the NAD receiver using the two audio portions of the (3-plug) cable and leaving the video part loose. That didn't work, there was no sound at all. How can I get a cd to work using my dvd/receiver combo?

Analog (red/white) or optical/Coax should all work just fine. I would say that 90% of us use a DVD player to CDs

If there is sound only when the TV is on then the audio and video outputs from the dvd/receiver are connected to the TV inputs. You would need external speakers attached to the dvd/receiver combo.

If you connect that dvd/receiver combo to the NAD receiver then you'd need speakers attached to the NAD.

If I'm understanding you correctly, that's what I did. I disconnected my dvd player from the tv (in my bedroom) and took it upstairs to the exercise room and plugged it into my NAD 7140 receiver, which already has working speakers connected to it. I plugged the dvd player into the NAD's CD connectors in back (white-color into left channel and red into the right channel.) Again, the speakers are connected, so I figure I should be getting sound. I used the cables that came with the dvd player, which are comprised of three plugs on each end [2 f/ audio (red and white) and 1 f/ video (yellow) per end] I didn't plug the yellow video plug into anything, as the old NAD doesn't have a socket for video and (besides) I'm not playing movies. So, while my dvd player plays cds via the tv hookup... it doesn't doesn't play them when when it's plugged into my receiver - w/ speakers
Am I doing this right?

It is just an assignment issue. Keep playing with it and it will work.

If you hook it up to the TV and get it working from the stereo analog output, you should be able to take it upstairs, plug it into the NAD and it should work.

I need to ask if on that older NAD receiver you did select the CD source?

If it is working with a CD in the bedroom, how was that connected? What happens when you unplug the video connection while the CD is playing, will the audio go mute?
Something is just not connected, assigned or selected as I have not heard that you need a video connection on a DVD player for analog audio, or digital audio for that matter.

By the way, when you tried it in the exercise room, was the window showing that the CD was playing and the time counting off?

Stupid remark but then you never know ..did you check that the input select switch on your NAD receiver is selecting the correct input ?

You may need to reconnect that dvd player to a TV so you can go in the menu and enable the analog output. if you had been using it as a dvd player you may have disabled analog output to use digital coax/optical audio output.

Yes I did have the selection set to CD, but that got me to thinking. I realized that I had been using the tape deck and so the "monitor-button" was pushed in on the NAD. I released the monitor button and heavenly sounds began to emerge Thanks everybody. I'm most appreciative, albeit a bit red-in-the-face from embarrassment.

Ah, the dreaded tape monitor loop is the source of many such issues where the setup seems correct and yet there is no sound. Glad you got it figured out.
