I read someplace recently (probably audioholics) that some pipe organs have low notes down to 16hz, most subs don't go that low do they?

SVS Ultra and the Paradigm Servo both claim to go down to 10hz. HSU claims 16hz. AccuDT says his trinity will go to 1hz;) and I am certain a bunch of other high end subs will easily hit the 16hz range.

Yes, Greg's advice is very good here. 16Hz would be a piece of cake for the Ultra in 15 Hz or 10 Hz tune.

There are more subs that can do ~16Hz if you factor in room gain.

There are many larger pipe organs with 32' pedal stops that go all the way down to 16HZ (the lowest C pedal). Usually the deepest stop to be used is the 16', which goes to 32Hz (A good piece to hear a pure 32Hz 16' pedal tone is Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor...E. Power Biggs did a great reading of it for Columbia which was reissued on the Sony Classics label...listen to the solo pedal line that opens the piece, it's very deep and poingnant.) Rather rare but sometimes seen are 64' ranks, which would be 8Hz when the low C is played!

Catharine Crozier's reading of Leo Sowerby's "Requiescat In Pace" on Delos has a subtle yet powerful use of the 32' pedal ranks at the end of the piece. Absolutely stunning, profoundly-moving music.

Seriously, I have no life.

That would depend on what spl levels at 16Hz you would consider adequate. Some will play 16Hz but at rather low output levels.

What 16 hz signal do you want to reproduce in a home theater?

I guess its generally unnecessary for a sub to go that low
one of the tones in that clip reminded me of the Martian machines in War of the Worlds :)

Well, you weren't hearing the real 8 hz tone - you were hearing some sort of distortion from poor recording and/or compression that happened to be getting louder about 8 times a second as an approximation of the original tone. Unless you already had something that could play that low audibly, you wouldn't be able to hear a pure tone if that's what was in the mp3.

Personally, I think it's totally necessary to be able to play it, but unfortunately the laws of physics don't intersect with profit margins well enough quite yet. :(

There are quite a few subs claim to go down to 16 hz, but how many can do so cleanly and with authority? Certainly Hsu & SVS make subs that will, as do: VMPS, Epik, Elemental Designs & Velodyne.

I'm happy with my passive Hsus but since the cylinder subs have been discontinued for years there's not a lot of point in me going on about a product you can no longer buy.

The SVS 16-46Pci and PC Plus are advertised as a Pipe Organ fans dream. I have a PC Ultra that can be tuned to 12Hz with decent output to 10Hz.
