Xbox 360 + optical

Until recently, I had been just using the stereo audio inputs from my Xbox 360 which only gets you Dolby Surround. I had thought there was some way to get an optical connection but I only had the A/V plus component connectors. Last weekend I spotted the optical connector on the adapter plug. D'oh! What a difference! Mass Effect is so much cooler in Dolby Digital.

I can't believe I was missing out on the full experience for so long. It's like when I upgraded from a 27" analog CRT to the 42" HDTV, only with sound.

Now I definitely need to get a newer receiver so I can hook up my PS2 through optical as well.

What???? That would not get you Dolby surround.
It would give you stereo.
And could be matrixed in the AVR to Dolby Pro Logic/Neo 6, etc.. depending on AVR
(this would have nothing to do with the Xbox, but what a individual has for an AVR).

I am guessing, that is what you meant?

But yes, optical/coax digital is leaps and bounds over 'stereo rca input'.

I thought Dolby Pro Logic could be encoded into the stereo analog inputs.

Anyway, I've always used coax for DVD until I got the Oppo and switched to the 5.1 analog. My receiver won't decode DTS but the Oppo seems to. Plus, I use that for DVD-A and SACD.

I really like the enhanced Dolby Digital circuitry that Yamaha uses. It sounds more lively that straight DD which is still very good. I guess I'm a Philistine.
