Problem with receiver shutting down.

Ok, so I have been trying to get into the home theatre business for awhile, and all i want to do is know more. My problem i have now is one i have never had. Whenever I turn the volume up past halfway on my receiver it shuts down. I thought maybe my receiver was just getting old, so i swapped it with the onkyo I have and it does the same thing. I have unplugged everything from the powerstrip except for the receiver and tried it again, and it still does it. If anyone has any answers I would greatly appreciate it.... thanks

Check your wire ends and be sure there aren't any stray wire strands sticking out.

Welcome bboock, it would also help to know what specific gear you are running. It also sounds like an impedance issue shutting down the receivers.

Did this rig ever work properly with your current speaker set up? If the answer is yes, then at least one of the speakers voice coils is likely fried and shorting turns of the voice coil, resulting in low impedance. If the answer is no, then the impedance your speakers present to your amp is too low.

Well after tearing my entire system back apart and putting everything back together it turned out I am assuming there were some wires touching somewhere, because I just rewired everything and it is working now. I did not see any touching when i took them apart, but I don't know what else that would have been. So thanks to all, I appreciate it. And if anyone happens to read this and is thinking of the onkyo 605..... don't get it. Thanks to all

that was a rather cheap shot at the Onkyo SR605, one of the most popular mid-priced a/v receivers on the market today. If you want your statement to have any credibility at all, please explain your comment. Do you have performance issues with the receiver, or just operator issues like the one addressed in this thread ??

I can share my performance issues with the 605. It has a bad processer that injects all kinds of tics and pops into the audio when in the Dolby Digital mode. This is a very common problem reported all over the place. It isn't something bbook or I created. The 605 drove me nuts and I recently replaced it with a better receiver because I couldn't stand it any more. Anyone who recommends this unit doesn't likely have personal experience with it. The 605 is good value in terms of features for the price. However, it is a poor value in terms of performance at any price. I second bbook's warning. I would suggest buying any OTHER receiver in its price range.

Want a good deal on a slightly used one, tics and pops and all? I still the thing in a closet upstairs. Good riddance. Sorry for the rant. I'm still upset that I bought the thing.

Yes, people in this forum and many others have had issues with the 605. It seems to be a fully loaded, inexpensive AVR with a slight hint of reliability.
