Well we made it back from Canada in one piece. The cave family went to Montreal after the Christmas holiday. Mikey (my 5 year old) saw snow for the first time and snow it did! I hit the Montreal underground to check prices on TVs and gear, same as down here even with the exchange favoring Canada, curiously I didn't see Bluray/HD DVD gear being promoted at all. We drove to Quebec City and took in Old Quebec, it felt like being in an Alpine Village, beautiful to say the least and the folk were friendly, we went inner tubing at Valcartier (sp?). Being so close to the US we visited Burlington, Vermont. We had lunch at a microbrewery/restaurant, for 3.00 you get to sample four of their brews, great stuff. Made it back to Montreal for the 31st/1st celebration. All in all a unique experience, my biggest kick was watching Mikey adapt to the snow, he said it wasn't at all like "Disney snow." We were also able to get excellent tickets for Cirque Du Soleil's Saltimbanco traveling show at Montreal's Bell Center, great show. Although short, we had a great time. I recommend Montreal/Quebec City to anyone wanting to have a different type of vacation, I'd like to see Old Quebec in the summer, in photos it looks like Europe. Anyway, glad to be back in the US, there's no place like home, just ask Dorothy.

Strat- you must plan a trip back up there sometime in the summer. Montreal is gorgeous during the nice weather (and a nice getaway from muggy Miami) and there's lots to do outside both on the Canadian and US side of the border up there. The city of Montreal is even more vibrant because everybody is out of the underground. At many of the ski resorts you can actually take the gondolas up and hike around the mountains. It's an interesting contrast to the bitter cold and snow of the winter.

39F degrees?

In Wisconsin we wear shorts at that temperature.

The wind chill last night was -21F by me. Ambient temp of about 1F to -2F.

It is supposed to warm up to the high 30's this weekend. Can you say HEAT WAVE!

However during the winter there's no worse place!!!

My girlfriend's family is from the Seattle suburbs... I've gone the past two Christmases and seen nothing but rain. I can vouch for the quality of the smoked salmon, however, as well as the dungeness crabs and the oysters.

I haven't seen the shoe thread, Rickster, but my advice....DON'T MESS WITH A WOMAN'S SHOES! Don't even talk about her collection...size...style...nothing. This could be BIG trouble.

A side story of Floridians and cold weather. I went to college in Va (where I was born). There was a guy there from Fla waiting outside with me and some others one day when it was about 38-40 with a light breeze. I had on my light jacket and he was bundled up like an Eskimo. He was shivering really hard, his nose was red, teeth chattering, etc. He said "How can you stand it up here!? It's FREEZING!" I laughed at him and told him it was nothing; wait till it REALLY gets cold!" He said, "Are you kidding me!?" "Nope. Wait till it's snowed, about 20 out with a stiff wind blowing" He started muttering something about being crazy and him going home as he walked off

Now, after living in SC for 30 years, I'm the one that freezes

Welcome back. I'm glad to see you enjoyed your stay in the Great White North in spite of the snow. Quebec City is nice in the summer but even I wouldn't want to be there in the winter. We visited once in the summer and spent the weekend at the Chateau Frontenac, the big hotel at the top of the hill. I can only imagine what the streets are like that ascend to the top of the hill in winter. Some of them are pretty steep.

Hey guys its nice to be back, I missed hanging around here. I was surprised that Mikey went up and down the hilly streets in old Quebec, my brother in law and I estimated he must have walked around 4 miles, not bad for a 5 year old on his first snow outing! Wifey left camera at office along with SD card, btw she knows what the SD card is, the first thing out of her trap when we got back was: "leave the camera alone, I'm taking it to the office and leave the card in the camera;" Smart that one. So sometime this evening I'll try and download. Maybe Mazer can talk to her, (I'd love to see that!)

I was blown away by the underground, it's like a giant ant farm or mole colony, good thing though you can get from one side of Montreal to the other without barely needing to go outside. Quebec(ians) is very French, but to be fair the ones we interacted with were nice, one of them confided that roughly 15-20 years ago they didn't speak English or at least pretended not to, but now they've come around, apparently they figured out it's good for business (tourism.) I'd love to go back during the summer specially to old Quebec, the photos I've seen look unreal.
