Hello Folks,

I just got an Onkyo 875 and I am having an issue with the set up (because I am a real novice). I hear sound from my the speakers when I try to play a dvd but I don't get the video display. I get audio and video for the cable so I am guessing I have it set up correctly

I have a Vizio tv (1080i) and have run an hdmi cable out from the 875 out port to one of the Vizio's hdmi in connections. The Vizio has AV1, AV2, Component 1, Component 2, HDMI 1 and HDMI 2. I get tv and sound in the component 1 setting on the tv.

I have have an old school toshiba dvd/cd changer and have run monster cables from the DVD player to the 875. In the video out on the dvd player I have connected the red and white to the right and left channles on the audio out and the yellow to the video out. I have analog 1 and analog 2 in the audi out of the dvd player. I have taken those 3 wires and plugged them into the audio in right and left and video in on 875.

Could someone shed any light for a rookie? Do I have things all worng? thanks in advance for your time.

The white and red outs from your DVD player are analog audio out. The yellow is composite video out, the lowest grade video connection. What other outputs do you have on your DVD player? I would not expect a receiver to output HDMI from composite video in, and there would be no point. Make a composite video connection from your receiver to the TV.

You likely will need a more up to date DVD player to get any good results.

Hey TLS Guy,

There is a port for s-video and then there is a port for Coaxial bitstream/PCM digital. does any of that sound familiar? the dvd player is from 2008. Can it be salavaged until I can save for a new one? The 875 cleaned me out for awhile :)

could you also please explain what this means or how I should do this:

Make a composite video connection from your receiver to the TV. Which ports should I use, etc.?

thanks so much!

OK, make an S-video connection from your DVD player to your receiver for video, and make a coax connection from your DVD player to the receiver for audio. You must use a digital coax cable, not any old RCA connector. Make sure in the set up menu you assign the same video channel as your S-video connection to the coax in and make sure it set to coaxial.

See if your receiver can output an HDMI signal from the S-video in. If not make an S-video connection from an S-video out on your receiver to an S-video in on your TV.

Video connections.

Composite. Single cable with RCA jacks, yellow connector the lowest quality video connection. Non HD.

S-video, a round connector with multiple prongs. A better video connection. Non HD

Component video. A cable with green, blue and red RCA connectors. The best analog connection and capable of transmitting an HD video signal.

HDMI. A digital video and audio connection. This is the best, but devices must be fully HDCP compliant to make the requisite handshakes.

thank you very much. what are red, blue and yellow cables used for? Also, i meant to say that the dvd player was a 2002. can I still try your approach based on it being a 2002?

That is a non standard cable color. What did you get it off? I suspect the yellow is a composite video, the others could be anything. Component cables are red, blue and green. Are you sure that is not the color of the cable?

You can use your 2002 player connected as I suggest.

great, thanks for your time. I'll give your suggestion a shot tomorrow. I have had those cables for 12 years using them to hook into my newly recycled pioneer elite dolby pro logic receiver :) thanks again!
