I'm "still" looking for a sub for my master bedroom 14x20x8 carpeted etc...Paradigm Studio 40v3 and Marantz SR7001 receiver...for music and HT. Have been considering the Hsu VTF2mk3, pretty much wrote off SVS due to the size and Axiom due too...let's say asthetic appeal. Then, I saw the Velodyne SPL-800R...this thing reminds me of the early Sunfire subs...what's the word on it? I would prefer something as small as possible as space IS a concern.

Well the HSU will more than likely outperform that little subwoofer. The small the subwoofer you get for the same price, the less performance you are likely to get. The STF-2 isn't very small, then again it isn't huge either. I think that the HSU will have more output, go deeper, and will be more accurate for music. I don't have any personal experience with the Velodyne, but in my experience small subwoofers like this don't stack up to larger subwoofers costing the same or less. The STF-2 is a very good subwoofer, and I plan on getting another one when my budget allows for it.

My question I guess is...is it comparable performance-wise to the sunfire subs. They were very small, very powerful and iirc, sounded awesome especially considering how small they were.

I personally found the Sunfire Truesub performance to not be that great. I had one and could never get it to sound good. Maybe I just never set it up correctly, but it just never sounded that good to me.

I have heard the Velodyne DD series subwoofers. To my ears, they sound unbelievable, delivering such fast and quick transient bass that has to be heard to be believed. It was a night and day difference between that DD series subwoofer compared to my old Yamaha sub.

The Velodyne SPL series doesn't have the DD series' servo feedback mechanism, hence the SPL series is one step down from the DD series. This means that the DD series produces less distortion than the SPL series. Aside from that, there isn't all that much difference between the two. Both employ automatic parametric equalization room correction.

I was stunned by the DD series performance. I haven't heard the SPL series. You should go audition them in person to see if they fit your taste.

I got a chance to hear this. Good stuff.

Excuse my short post, but I need to get to 5 posts to reply to a PM.

What is wrong with this SVS. Have you looked at it's dimensions?

SB12-Plus

Yes I have...a 12 is too big for the application I'm looking for. As for the SVS 10" offering...I've heard it and was very unimpressed. The only reason I've even considered the Hsu 12" is it's downfiring configuration would make it useable in the area I'm looking to fill were a front firing sub of that size would not.

This is not the first time I've read about people being unimpressed with SVS subs.

So have you made a decision yet regarding the Velodyne SPL series sub?

Since I am unable to listen to either the velodyne or the hsu...i'm going to sit on it a month and then order either the SPL-1000 or the VTF2-Mk3.

IMO, there is no more efficient use of space than the 800R. Of course then I got the 1000R, then I had to get the 1500R. A little spendy, but deals can be had. And the sound, oh my, tighter than a snare drum.:D

I own the 800r and am simply amazed at the quality of bass.
Tight and clean.
This sub keeps up with my paradigm studio 20's np
My brother was so impressed when listening to my system (he wouldn't say anything while listening ) he went out on boxing day and bought one :)

The velodyne is fairly tight, uses the same amp as spl10, good for a 900 sub.
