I am sorry to say i made the mistake of buying a set of 3 bose speakers, 2 cubes, 1 center not knowing how much headache and disappointment that would follow. I have decided to chuck em and get a new set. I would like to get 3 speakers like i have now, so a decent left/right and center. If I can scrape together about 300 clams what would you guys recommend buying?

or if i can get by with two decent speakers rather than 3 crappy ones i would rather go that route..

thanks.

From this link;

Holiday Special 1: Re-certified CBM-170 SE for only $258 /pr + shipping!*

There has never been a better time to experience what is arguably the most popular ID loudspeaker ever introduced! The loudspeaker that set the performance standards for all others…

Due to Sierra-1 upgrades, we have a limited supply of CBM-170 SE trade-ins. These speakers have been completely reconditioned with brand new woofers and tweeters. The only parts that haven’t been replaced with new components are the cabinets and crossovers. While some of these units might have minor cosmetic defects, the majority of these are in like-new shape (thank the many customers who took such good care of their speakers). These units still come with our 30-day satisfaction guarantee and 5-year parts and labor warranty.

The only stipulations are that we are allowing only 1 pair per customer at this price and supplies are limited.

Please note: Due to the reduced pricing, these units do not qualify for our package price discounting.

Have a listen to lower end PSB or Paradigm. You won't be disappointed.

I actually spent some time to listen to some Bose speakers recently. Initially, I couldn't believe it but actually thought they sounded decent for what they were. After turning them up a bit to what might represent closer to real world movie watching volumes, they sounded so harsh that I likely couldn't listen more than 15 minutes at that level without getting a headache.

The AV123's are backordered at the moment, but are due to start shipping again in late January. I'm still waiting on mine, and can't wait to see how they sound! :D I got exactly what Mazer suggested for the Left, Right Center channels - very good price-factor for the quality that these speakers appear to carry.

Oh, and all highs, no lows... must be Bose! A friend of mine (audio/visual engineer) taught me that. :D

Is is possible to get by with a sub and l/r for a while without the center and rears?

Yes it is. you could run what is called a "Phantom Center Channel". I would get the rears, and do without the sub myself.

would you guys recommend cheaper speakers and go for 5.1 or more expensive and go with 2.1 until i can afford more?

I dont really care for the back speakers so would 2.1 give me enough volume and sound clarity if i go for a good pair?

You just answered your own question. ;)

Yes, start with good front channels and add surrounds later. You don't want compromise and end up with more speakers you aren't happy with.

Ten folds, I would say to get the best 2.1 you can and add on later.
