Hi everyone, I'm new here and I've already searched the board but the thread I found wasn't specific enough, so I decided to sign up and explain you guys my problem. I'm trying to set up a HiFi quality computer, by that I mean that I plan on ripping my cd's losslessly and playing them through my sound card, while trying to get the best sound quality possible, so here are my questions:
-What's the best cd drive? I was thinking about a plextor dvd/cd drive
-What's the best sound card? I've heard about Lynx and RME
-What kind of speakers can I use? Can I use regular HiFi speakers? If not which speakers should I get?
Thanks for your help

I have been though this.

Rules use a quiet power supply and cooling fan from stop PC noise.

Use two screens. Audio work is very consumptive of screen space.

Use a Plextor drive.

Use an external DAC. For good results it needs to be out of the case and not powered by the computer power supply.

I used the RME Fireface 800

Use good software. I use Steinberg WaveLab 6

Good luck and a Merry Christmas!

Hi there ratdog,

I do the same thing -- ripped all my CDs to FLAC and keep them on a server in the basement. They stream to my HTPC, which sits behind my audio rack.

I wasn't too concerned about the drive itself, as the software I'm using (Exact Audio Copy, aka "EAC") ensures that it has read the data properly. EAC can also be set up to access the Internet to get all the audio tags, etc.

I use a rather cheap digital out sound card to feed my preamp. It happens to use an optical connection, but I've also used one that had a coax digital connection. As suggested by TLS Guy, you should use an external DAC, and those digital connections will allow you to do that. I know SoundBlaster offers some, and there are many others as well.

I use Winamp to play the audio back. It interfaces fine with FLAC, and organizes things nicely for me. I tried a bunch of other players, but I liked the Winamp interface the best.

Thanks for the help guys, so I'll be looking for an external DAC. I'm not to interested in recording music, even though a couple of inputs wouldn't bother me, my main interest is listening to music. I don't have an amplifier or anything so I'm looking for something simple that I can plug into my computer, connect to a pair of speakers and enjoy some high quality sound. That fireface 800 that you showed me, can it do this? I'm looking for something around 1000$ but I can go a bit above.
Thanks again

EDIT: Simply put, I want something that will serve the purpose of a normal amp, put that I can plug into my computer by firewire and that has some recording capabilities

The RME is line level output balanced and unbalanced option. You need an amp or powered speakers, and that will apply to any sound card.

Keep in mind, ratdog, that a preamp or receiver can serve as an external DAC. For the most part, I think you'd be OK with going that path, rather than a fully external DAC. For example, the Benchmark DAC-1 is a well-respected outboard DAC, but it'll cost you $1k by itself, and you'll still need amplification. It shouldn't be too hard to find an integrated amp or receiver under $1k that will do both the DAC stage as well as amplification.

An integrated amp, receiver, or DAC that has a firewire interface will be hard to come by. It's possible that they exist, of course, but I'm not familiar with any. In general, I'd expect to go optical or coax digital from the soundcard to the integrated amp/receiver.

As to recording possibilities, many can accept a line-level input. If you need a high degree of fidelity, you may have to do some research. If you just want to be able to record a line-level stereo source for general purposes, most can do that with an analog input (and some with a digital input).

Keep in ming that his first post said that he wanted a high fidelity system. From Ratdog's subsequent posts it seems his requirements are not critical.

I needed a extreme fidelity. I had a couple of professional consultants guide me in the equipment selection one of whom teachers a college courses on these types of systems. If you want really good fidelity I can vouch for the route I went. I have been thrilled with the whole system.

In any case, I don't really trust powered speakers so I'll go for a Amp, do you guys have any ideas? Are there any amps that are specialized for DACs?
Thanks again

EDIT: Ottomatic, many amps don't have digital inputs so I was thinking it would be easier to have high quality analog output from the soundcard/DAC something that, from what I understand, I can't get from a cheaper sound card.

Hi guys.

If I were going to do something like that, I'd go digital out of the PC to a Benchmark DAC-1 and then to an integrated or power amp. Take your pick on AudiogoN...

Benchmark DAC-1 (sold, and so are several others, but more will come up; or you can buy a new one, with USB connection (which will get rid of the need for any soundcard) for something like $1275).

Integrated amps:

Note that you don't need an integrated amp with the Benchmark DAC-1, as it has a volume control. You can go to a straight power amp if you want.

The above might start to strain your $1k budget, but not by much if you shop around.

Hey guys, I've looked around a bit and I've came up with a system that meets my budget, I did it mostly by specs because I don't really know any of the brands, so tell me what you think:
For the DAC I was thinking about the MOTU 828 MK2 ( w w w .motu.com/products/motuaudio/828 )
And for the amplifier I was thinking about the APART PA2120MKII ( w w w .apart-audio.com/Products/productDetails.aspx?id=73 )
Then I'd just hook that up to some normal HiFi speakers
So what do you guys think? How would the sound of this compare when playing ripped cds compared to a normal integrated amplifier and a cd player?
Thanks for the help

Hey ratdog. I don't know those parts, but I'm sure they'll work fine. They both appear to be pro gear, so there might not be a lot of experience with them around these forums. It's hard to say how it'll sound compared to another system, so you'll have to let us know what you think!
