New 2.0 System Help/Advice Needed

In order to get the wifey interested in my hobby, I made the mistake of gearing my audio system for home theater double duty so she could be happy when she watches movies. Unfortunately, she's almost always on the couch (or in her Lazy *****) watching movies so my listening time is very limited.

I've got the go ahead to make a studio/jam room/computer room/bar/man room in the basement. I've been told that I CANNOT take the Quad 22L's with me because she likes them and they match her entertainment stand. Wow, the WAF once again is causing problems. This time in reverse.

So, I'm going to build a dual purpose PA/2-channel system for the basement.

I'll use cheap PA speakers for band practice and some good speakers for listening, but I'm going to drive them off of the same amp, switching as necessary.

Any recommendations on an amp that will fulfill double duty? Would a Mixer serve as a good enough Pre-Amp? Should I use a reciever as the pre since it would be much cheaper than a dedicated Pre-amp?

Since I finally got a source other than my $39 DVD player(are they called stop-gaps?) I like the Quads and the system is "close" to a sound I find acceptable as far as brightness/warmth/tonality, etc. I'm not saying it's perfect or anything of that nature, but I'm looking for CHEAP Pre-Pro, Speakers, etc. that will give me similar qualities. Obviously, I'm going for better sound than in my HT setup upstairs that I really enjoy as a 2 channel setup. I would really like some suggestions to keep the warm, detailed sound with totally different equipment than I have upstairs.

The Quads excel in easier listening environments like acoustic music, vocals and jazz. They're a little lacking for rock and metal. Speaker recommendations with similar qualities are welcomed.

Thanks guys and keep the advice coming.;)

Sorry, I'm an idiot. I know that budget should be addressed upfront.

$1000 ~$1300 for speakers, amp and pre.
This doesn't include the PA speakers or mixer.
I'm slightly geared towards a low watt HK AVR146, Behringer EP2500, and either some Quad 21L's or whatever I'm steered towards.

Thanks for pointing out to the world that I'm an idiot. At first glance, most people would never know.

How do the Mackie's sound in a non-near field position? I know that most of the monitors are designed for about 3-5 feet away from the listener. How do they sound 12 feet away? I've always used my stereo system for mixing because I know what I want it to sound like on my system. (And I never had any monitors)

IMO they sound great. If your looking to blast Van Halen at over 100dB's then these are not for you.

Well, I'll probably NEVER play Van Halen. I don't think anything would sound good playing Van Halen! (sort of a joke, but hey)

I will probably blast the Tool, As I Lay Dying, 21 Degree Deadrise and other heavier things as well as selected Rock n Roll, Jazz Fusion, Acoustic stuff.

Salad, if you are serious about wanting the best sound for the stated budget: look up my user name and my posting history and reply in this thread stating that you would like my suggestions. I only give carefully thought out suggestions, and I don't want to waste my time if you are not serious.
