So confused on how to hook things up....

Morning all,

I very happy to have found the forum as I'm trying to figure out my whole wiring issues that will be coming up with my new panasonic 42px75u (2x component, 2xHDMI), new HD Set-Up box for HD channels, PS3 (for gaming and BR of course) coming in the next few weeks. I'm glad to have found monoprice too cause upgrading means upgrading cables to and retail stores are just a ripoff when it comes to wiring. So if anyone can help out with the setup below, it would be greatly appreciated.

First off I want just about everything to go through my receiver if that is possible. I do not have any HDMI inputs or outputs on it though as it is a few years old already. But I really love that receiver and would like to stick with it for a few more years. I also have a Wii and PS2 to hook up as well. The rest doesn't change so I won't mention it.

This is what I'm thinking to do up to now.

Wii - - > Component directly to the TV (I don't need 5.1 for this system atm)
PS2 - - > Component to receiver
PS3 - - > HDMI to TV and Component to receiver (does this make sense?)
HD Box - -> HDMI to TV and Component to Receiver

What about the TV itself...what should I do for sound? Use a basic analogue?

Am I complicating myself too much or I'm off completely in this?

I would get a fully HDCP compliant HDMI switcher, and switch the audio and video separately.

If you don't have an HDMI receiver, there's not too much reason to use it for video switching if your TV has enough inputs for everything. The only trouble you might run into is with the PS3. I don't think you can run HDMI and analog at the same time.

If you want switching in the receiver, the best way to go might be something like this:
Wii - component and audio to receiver
PS2 - component and audio to receiver
PS3 - component and audio to receiver (but this won't get you Blu-ray, see below)
HD box - HDMI to tv, digital audio to receiver (I'm assuming you don't have more than 3 component on the receiver)
Component from receiver to TV.

Use digital audio into the reciever from any source that has it, either toslink or coax. This way, your receiver will do all the switching except the HD box.

If you hook the PS3 directly to the TV via HDMI, you could use the TV audio output into the receiver. Hopefully the TV has digital audio output, but even then, some TV downmix the digital audio to 2 channel for output. The PS3 is going to mess up your connections, since it won't do digital and analog at the same time.

It may be time for an HDMI receiver upgrade???

Sigh...that's what I was hoping you would not tell me hehe. I guess the only way around it would be to have the PS3 directly hooked to the TV and that's it. Sound would only come out there for that device correct? I honestly did anticipate a new receiver until last night actually. :(

Your TV does have analog and digital audio output. I had a look to see. You could hook everything directly to the TV and do all your video switching from the TV. Then run both analog audio and digital audio out of the TV into two separate receiver inputs to amplify the sound from whatever TV source you're watching.

It can be done. With luck, one of our fellow Audioholics will have a more elegant solution to the problem.

Thanks for the latest info. I managed to download the manual of the model I wanted and looked more closely at the imputs/outputs and yes I could hook up both wii and ps2 on component and hd box + ps3 via hdmi. So in the end it would be just sending a signal back to the receiver. I'll look more closely at the way you mentioned for that.
