I was originally planing on the Onkyo SR875, but after reading up allot on these forums and a few words from other members, I went ahead and ordered the Emotiva IPS-1 7 channel amp. I heard it weighs in at over 90 Pounds. That is just crazy!!! I still can't believe I ordered it and wont even get to use it until late February when my new house is done.

So now I'm going to need a pre-amp with the new DTS HD and Master Audio decoding and I should have some great sounding gear!!

I talked to Dan @ Emotiva ans he informed me that since all my speakers contain there own built in amplifier to power the subs that I would have more than enough power to drive everything else. plus i have a hard time paying $1,000 more dollars for only 50 more watts a channel.

Besides having to turn all of them on, Would seven of those bridged sound better than my one IPS-1?
It is highly unlikely as both the Behringer amp and the Emotiva amps test very well and should be inaudible in powering the speakers. So the question becomes do you need that much headroom and the answer is likely no unless the speakers you have are in an absolutely massive room. Remember every doubling in power only gives you 3dB more output so you aren't getting too much more dynamic capability by getting 7 A500s.

This is a hobby where upgrades are always possible and if you have the means to do so very easy, but that doesn't alway mean they are right. Be happy with what you have and don't worry about every little detail you don't want to turn into an audiophool after all :p.

No!

The IPS-1 is an "audiophile" grade audio Amp where as the beringer is a "Pro-Audio", they were designed for different purposes.

The Beringer will of course work but it is not in the same class as the IPS-1. The IPS-1 is a Mono-block design; there are actually 7 independent amplifiers under the hood each with its own dedicated power transformer.

While the term "audiophile grade" means a lot to people who know little in the end it means nothing. Marketing is marketing and it suits us to remember that in this snake oil filed hobby. The A500 tests incredibly well especially at its price point and above it. Not only that, but Behringer amps are incredibly well built. The real question between the two is do you want all the extra space taken up and do you need the extra head room - nothing else. They will both have amazing sound quality end of story.

Also, realize I am not saying anything bad about Emotiva amps they also test very well and I will likley be using 2x LPA-1s to power my active set up when I have completed the build.

Behringer A500

You can only use the Behringer amps in 500 Watt bridged mode with an 8 ohm load so this configuration wont work if you have speakers that are in the 4-6 ohm impedance range.

I think one of the mods majorloser is using 5-7 of the Behringer amps for his HT.

Yeah I am just going to stick with my IPS-1 and stop trying to buy more and more when I haven't even heard the current setup.

hahahahahah

Did not mean to imply that "audiophile" grade meant better quality as only testing can prove that and you are correct that it is a marketing buzzword, I just implied that it was designed for audio and therefore has "audio stuff" like 12v triggers & status LED's, long transferable waranty, etc.

Since you have some time to kill may I recommend an Integra 9.8 I have it paired with an IPS and love the setup. It's head and shoulders better then my previous Pioneer Elite.

Maybe by February you can track one down.

I agree with you. I would take the Emotiva over a Behringer any day. The design is truly the key to its performance.

P.S. I would suggest reading Audioholics testing procedures and comparing them against the other guys. Not the same methods.

I wonder is seven of these ( http://www.savinglots.com/lotprod.asp?item=A500&gclid=CKnM88D_spACFSFaagodfUjWMA ) Would be better than 1 IPS-1 ??? 500 watts a channel @ 8 Ohm
I would suggest several Behringer EP2500 amplifiers. This will be in another league of performance, compared to either of those selections. The Ep2500 can power virtually any impedance down to 2 ohms. At 2 ohm, less then 0.2% THD at almost 1100 watts per channel, both channels driven, is possible. Brdiged mono, 2000 watts at 4 ohms, with less than 0.2% THD.

The build quality on the Behrniger EP amplifiers is extremely high -- better than many 'audiophile' amplifiers I have seen, including my old McIntosh MC754 amplifiers and my Adcom 555.

Wow! That is great power. 450 Watts x 2 @ 8 ohms, 650 watts x 2 @ 4 ohms...SWEET!

So 4 amps = 8 channels = $1,400?

Very INTERESTING!
