Help me pick my new TV

Hey folks,

I'm looking to upgrade my TV before the end of the year. I want to buy at Best Buy, because I have a Best Buy card, plus I've heard they're doing 3 years, no interest financing right now. I currently have a Mitsubishi RPTV that I love, but it's too damn big, (depth), plus it doesn't do 720p. My current TV is 48" and I don't want to go smaller.

I was pretty much set on getting a DLP, but lately I've been looking at LCD's and most of the time, the picture is quite a bit better. I have seen a couple of Mitsubishi DLP's that looked almost as good as the LCD's I saw. I'm just going by what I see in the stores, so I realize that needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

So here's what I want:

1. Something in the 50" to 60" range.
2. I would prefer 1080p, but I could probably deal with 1080i.
3. I would like to stay under $2,000 if at all possible.


So what do you guy's think? Help me spend my money. It doesn't really matter to me whether it's DLP, LCD or Plasma. I just want to get the best value of picture quality and performance for my money.

If you don't want to go DLP, look into the HD-ILA from JVC and the SXRD sets from Sony. Both are very good performers. Both brands have three chip models as well.

SXRD or LCD. Hit up Magnolia in Santa Clara, they should take the BB card also (call to verify, but they are owned by BB). That is where I bought my TV and they always have great deals this time of year.

I didn't even think of that. Thanks John. I was looking on the Best Buy site and came across 3 TV's that seem promising.

Samsung 56" LED DLP #HL-T56875

Samsung 52" LCD #LN-T5265F

Mitsubishi 65" DLP #WD-65733

All 3 are about the same price. Do the LED DLP TV's really last longer than regular DLP? Of those 3, which one do you think it the best bang for the buck?

The 60" Sony SXRD A3000 can be had at BB for around $2000 and it is a great TV. CNET gave it a really good review.

I would also recommend you check or just stay away from samsung DLP's all together. Their bezels are very cheaply made and in some models when you push on top of the screen with a finger the image collapses. Stay away from all of the super thin bezel samsungs.

Yeah I found this out when I was out looking at TVs. The first TV I bought was a 50" Samsung DLP but when I got home I went on AVS and people were complaining about the bezel. The problem is the top of the bezel as it is very thin. Easiest way to check is to go to a BB and check out all of those thin bezel samsungs. Then put your finger on the middle top of the TV and push down lightly. You will notice the screen itself collapse down and form a smiley face.

The major problem with this is that a lot of people upon getting their set delivered have gotten a collapsed screen probably from shipping because of the bezel being way too flimsy on top. The main culprits are the thin DLPs and LED DLPs as they have the same bezel.

I can't speak to those 3 specifically, but I have owned a Samsung 46" LCD for just under a year right now (LN 4695D) and have absolutely loved it. No problems whatsoever and outstanding PQ- particularly with my BD movies and PS3 games in 1080p.

Only downside of Samsung is their menu system requires way too many "clicks" and is incredibly annoying when trying to calibrate.

But...if you're near a Costco, take a look, they have great prices.

Damn. I was trying to avoid Sony TV's because part of the reason I'm getting a new TV is due to the PS 3's lack of 720 to 1080 upscaling. I didn't want to give Sony any more of my money, but that TV looks promising.

Well, I'm off to BB on my lunch hour. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Well, I ended up going with the Samsung 52" LCD. It just looked like it had better picture quality than the others. I pick it up on Friday. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Which model was it? And you got it for around $2000? Because if you did that is a killer deal.

It was the Samsung LN-T5271F. Best Buy has it on sale right now for $1999. 1080p, 120hz, HDMI 1.3, it almost seems too good to be true. We'll see how I like it after I've had it for a while.

Apparently you can. I don't know why the Best Buy website doesn't show it, but they'er selling it for $1999. I'd rethink Amazon if I were you.

Circuit City still has 36 mos., but it is only on the Panasonic plasmas 50" and up.

I checking into the Samsung bezels as well. Of the three sets they had out only one model did the smiley face deal. The LED DLP was rock solid on the bezel.

I was going to say, that is over $1,000 off what the 52" 71 series normally goes for.
