Dumb question re subwoofer

I just started RVing and the trailer I purchased had a COBY 5.1 unit that does not produce 5.1 from HDTV. So, I bought a new entry level Sony 5.1 receiver wirth a sub output. I have been trying to connect the Coby sub to the sub out and I cannot get any sound. The sub is a 2 wire and the sub out on the receiver is an RCA jack. The sub is not powered. I suppose I am trying to use the sub as a just another speaker and the sub out is not a matched
output level. The sub works when connected to a normal speaker output connection. Sony instructions do not specifically state that I cannot hook a non-powered sub to the sub out on the receiver.

I will probably, I suspect, have to purchase a powered sub to get the desired sound??

You have effectively answered you own question. Get a powered sub.

You could use the "B" speaker outputs (if it has these), which are full range to power the sub. Another option would be to get an inexpensive amp to drive the sub. Simplest overall would be a powered sub though.

Yes, but a line level connection does not have sufficient power to effectively power a subwoofer.

Line level is is a PRE-amp signal; it is not powered at all. You need to pass that signal through an amp to get it to the point where a speaker can use it.
