2 Questions: Center channel necessary, and tower vs bookshelf for midbass

I was playing some XFM music over my Direct Tv tonight with the wife out. I turned the ONKYO to Stereo and put my ear up to the Center and it was blasting along with the two front surrounds! What is with that?

Regarding Center- I just don't get it at all - Dialogue? I heard Ricky and Lucy fine out of my old DUMONT TV with a pair of plyers to change stations. It only had a 10 inch center!

Seems like good front surrounds are most important to these discriminating ears - rear surrounds - same thing. Car horns and bullits from the rear sound good on any old pair of speakers from the 70's.

Congrats and rock on!! ;)

Configuration wise, what did you end up getting? Just the two towers?
I have the two bookshelves (on speaker stands) and a Bic h-100 sub. :)

But, is it (Center Speaker) necessary?
I think that you'll be pleased with the addition of a center channel, but it's not necessary.
I think if you have a FULL Range Tower speaker like the Aperion Intimus 533-PT (24Hz-20kHz +/-10dB @ 90dB w/m), you can do without a Center Speaker.

Like everyone says, a Center Speaker is a great addition, but not necessary.
