If your going to get into HT or HI-FI the best thing you could ever do is to stay away from credit purchase's,save up cash & buy one peice at a time.

You must find your own truth! For me, it's like this: Not all amps sound the same, specs aren't everything, don't be swayed by speakers that stand out in an obvious manner on a show room floor, tubes don't suck, placebo effect is real, if you want multi-channel - start with a great two channel system and slowly build, don't buy solely on a review and don't spend crazy amounts of money on cables.

That's just my viewpoint...other listeners will agree or disagree with the above list, but as long as your beliefs guide you to happiness, then that is all that matters!

Collect all of the info that you can, but in the end, listen to the gear that's in question and make a decision for yourself. You probably will never own a system that is the Grail System. You might think it is, then you'll make an upgrade somewhere, and suddenly you've discovered an improvement. Also, even if you have the money to get "the best in the world", you'll probably come to your senses and by a new house, or small island somewhere.

What do you mean all amps don't sound the same? This isn't a jab, but I am more curious about what you believe about amplifiers, as your statement is a tad vague.

Hey Seth - I've heard some pretty notable differences between amplifiers. I've always been surprised by the outcome from switching amps. This is because my expectations for a difference, or improvement have always been very low.

My demos have always been at home, and with a return policy of some sort, so I never had to psychologically talk myself into a change that wasn't there, just to justify my purchase. I use measurements first when buying, because everything that I own has been bought on-line. For instance, the speakers that I use like a high damping factor, so the amp that I just bought was added to the short-list.

But the truth is in the listening, and I think everyone here would hear a difference to my old amplifier - I don't have "golden" ears by any stretch...

Ok, so you are compairing amplifier topologies? If so, that was the answer I was pretty much looking for. Class A/B amplifiers are about as good as they can ever be, which is what most receivers use. More and more I see switching amplifiers (class D) in new receivers because they save space and are more efficient to the watt. Derivitives of the switching amplifier are approaching if not matching the neutrality of A/B amps.

Perhaps the protocol of comparing was flawed? Well designed amps are transparent.

But, you were psychologically affected one way or the other most likely. The hidden, subconscious human bias with no on/off switch in site.

Or, the truth is in listening properly, bias controlled? Good amps are good amps old or new.
