You must find your own truth! For me, it's like this: Not all amps sound the same, specs aren't everything, don't be swayed by speakers that stand out in an obvious manner on a show room floor, tubes don't suck, placebo effect is real, if you want multi-channel - start with a great two channel system and slowly build, don't buy solely on a review and don't spend crazy amounts of money on cables.
That's just my viewpoint...other listeners will agree or disagree with the above list, but as long as your beliefs guide you to happiness, then that is all that matters!
Collect all of the info that you can, but in the end, listen to the gear that's in question and make a decision for yourself. You probably will never own a system that is the Grail System. You might think it is, then you'll make an upgrade somewhere, and suddenly you've discovered an improvement. Also, even if you have the money to get "the best in the world", you'll probably come to your senses and by a new house, or small island somewhere.
