First, let me say I am so glad that I came across this forum. I have already learned alot from reading the posts. I thank all of you who take the time to help.

I read the post regarding ground loops and I don't think that's the problem I'm having.

I have a Sony 5.1 system.

The noise I hear is more of a "whine" (or high-pitched hum, I guess). It's only on the Video 1 & Video 2 audio inputs. Also, it doesn't happen right away. It starts about an hour after turning it on.

Any help on possible causes and fixes would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

What devices are connected to those inputs? Does the sound go away if the peripherals connected to video 1 & 2 are switched off and or disconnected? Also switch off any light dimmers there may be in the house and see if that stops the interference. Let us know.

At one point I disconnected everything but the center channel speaker and I still heard the noise. I also plugged it in to 3 different outlets in 3 different rooms.

You did not answer all my questions. Do you have light dimmers, and if so are they all off? If you still hear the noise with no dimmers on and all inputs disconnected, then your Sony is either defective or junk. Unfortunately junk appear to be proliferating at an exponential rate on all fronts.

Right now I do not hear the noise regardless of whether the dimmers are on or off but since it usually takes a while for it to happen I will leave the system on and make sure all dimmers remain off and post the results tomorrow.

Thanks TLS

Since this issue doesn't manifests itself until a good while, I seriously doubt it is any of your dimmers or this noise would be heard as soon as a dimmer is on, not an hour afterwards.

So, it looks like internal parts may be defective and heat sensitive perhaps?

I think he should eliminate all variables, then he will know it is the receiver, which I suspect. However I never assume, and may be he has a dimmer he switches on when he used his rig, and this makes more RF as it heats up. You just never know. All I know for certain is that if there is nothing connected to his receiver except speakers and there are no obvious sources of RF about, it is likely his receiver.
