Hey there -
most people say they're computer illiterate - I am audio equipment illiterate - well maybe not that bad... but here's the scoop -
just refinished my finished basement - thought it would be nice to have some sort of home theater - wasnt l;ooking to spend a lot - not going to stay here much longer but still wanted something -
Initially I wanted 5.1 surround to override the speakers on the TV i have. they've totally crapped out. tv has the option to turn off speakers, used a pair of PC speakers to try out the "speakers off" option to see if the TV sound would work no problem.
Next - bought (like i said cheap) home theater set up, 5.1 surround w/dvd ( coby CS-P63 5.1 ch home theater)
thought to myself, perfect... get it home, say - hold up... this isnt going to work - this will only play DVD sound - No problem, i'll bypass the dvd & hook speakers & sub to a receiver - bought - Receiver JVC RX 6018VBK 5.1 channel 500 Watt ...
got the 5 speakers to go - but no sub b/c it's proprietary to the home theater set up.

Any ideas on a quick work around - should I scrap the whole idea & just buy separate components to go with the receiver so I can use the set up for cable TV as well as DVD's & such.

Please help

If you can return those components, then it would probably be better to just start over. If you can establish a budget and a desired goal, we can point you in the right direction and probably find you some great deals on better equipment.

*sigh*

I figured...if it came down to to getting rid of the dvd theater combo thing I was just going to move it to my brothers room...
Okay - so perhaps you could help me on the price range thing -
set up doesnt have to be blow the roof off he house good - just decent.
also - the whole thing is in a basement - think rectangle with the "living room" set in the center

so there isnt a lot of wiggle room.

I was thinking no more than 200 - if it's possible

hey -
no actually I have the receiver - I think is a fairly decent one, for what im trying to accomplish here -(JVC RX 6018VBK 5.1 channel 500 Watt)

200 for non-proprietary sub & speakers...
I found these on the crutchfield website - Infinity TSS-450
5 compact satellite speakers and a powered subwoofer

Would they do the job?

The Infinity TSS-450 would be much better than the Coby, I would go with those.

$200 for receiver and speakers?

If i go with 2 - 3 pairs of these Insignia speakers - would I be able to find a sub that would compliment my system that's still with in my price range? or should i consider dropping a little more $$ into this system?

Insignia, as a brand, is a no-go zone for me. If you can find a decent product from a respected name brand like the Infinity, I would recommend that over any Insignia.

If you are thinking of upping the budget to get better quality, there are many more choices to make. For instance, you could spend $2-300 and get one nice pair of main speakers, then build on that over time as budget allows into a 5.1 system. Over time, that will produce the highest quality system within your budget. Start with a nice pair of bookshelves, add a sub later, then add a center, then move the bookshelves to surounds and get a better set of mains.

One thing is sure, it's best to decide beforehand where you want to end up. False starts and premature replacement of components can get expensive.
