I have a samsung model 5078 RP DLP set and it starting showing a strange artifact on the left side of the screen. It basically looks almost like a misadjusted CRT with a pincushioned dark stripe running down the left side of the screen. However you can still see a picture in the dark area. In between the dark area and the normal part of the screen is something like looks like a "shadow." My best guess is the the DLP chip is fine (otherwise you wouldn't see a picture at all in the dark area) and the lamp is obviously fine. Any ideas?

The pic is pretty blurry, so it's hard to see what you are talking about.

If you check out the far left side of the image there's a 3 inch strip of dark image. I will try to take a better photo..

Here's a zoomed-in detail shot of the problem area which is a 3 inch strip on the far left side of the screen between the bezel and the "normal" part of the image.

That is the light tunnel collapsing. You need a new light engine or light tunnel depending on the model. That is unfortunately a common problem with Samsung DLP sets.

How much do those run and is it an easy repair?

To mytrcraft -- it's a 2.5 year old set, no warrantee left.

Boy, if this or these have such a failure rates, maybe need to try another type of TV:eek:
Some of the old CRTs lasted 15 years plus. Had a BRX.;)

Depending on the model the light engine may be replacable in house. The cost is probably somewhere between $400 and $900.

Mtrycrafts, Samsung hasn't had very good luck with DLP sets. Other companies like Mitsubishi have done better, though with a few lemon models.

Yes, but that kind of experience may sour one's taste:eek:
At least they should give an extended warranty on it free for their failures.
