If Warner drops HD DVD in 2008, how long will the format war continue?

With all the talk about Warner dropping HD DVD early next year (rumour only) do you think the format war would be over quickly soon after?

To summarize, in terms of studios actively releasing this would make it:

HD DVD: Universal, Paramount/Dreamworks

Blu-ray: Warner Bros., New Line, Sony/Columbia/Tri-Star, 20th Century Fox, MGM/United Artists, Walt Disney/Pixar/Hollywood Pictures/Touchstone/Buena Vista, Lions Gate

Weinstein aren't listed as they've not released anything in HD since June 2007

Absolutely not.
It most certainly would be a bad move.

Good thing it is a rumour.

With the large sales to people buying for this Christmas (those cheap HD DVD players), for others.
Those people have not even unpacked their players yet, and once they do, just after X-mas you will most certainly see a boom in HD DVD sales.
While BD will have sold a lot of PS3s, they will not by any means have competed with the the large volume of HD DVD players that have been sold, specifically for HD movies.

And what movies are they going to buy? After Bourne Ultimatum there is nothing good coming out on hd dvd.

Cleary a personal opinionated response.
There are plenty of good movies.

I do keep seeing people say there are better movies on BD, yet the last few large sales I saw, those same people said 'nah, nothing on that list I would buy.':D
Classic.

BTW, for the mods, I suggest that this post had no real intentions of talking about movies.
But more for a flame to start, and would bet (not that I am a betting man), that you will be certainly moving this to the correct place (the Steam vent).

Who wants to take dibs on that bet?

If Paramount hadn't whored themselves off to M$/Toshiba then maybe the end of the "war" would be a little bit more crystalised.

Maybe all the other brands can take turns at been M$'s b*tch when Paramount are done.

;)

The format war will not end until every consumer is turned upside down & shaken for loose change.

You must only like loud action movies. Bourne actually has dialog and a plot. So, I guess nothing good has come out since Transformers.

Seriously, both formats are winding down action movies until next spring/summer. That's just the cycle. If I had a Blu-Ray player, I would look forward to some of the dramas getting released by Sony.

This is audioholics, so I will mention The Pianist is getting released with a lossless soundtrack very soon. New Line will finally street Hairspray and Pan's Labyrinth. If you need something loud, there's The Kingdom.

To the OP, the Warner rumor is for know just a rumor.

Time will tell on your last points. There are far more PS3's out there then all the hd players. I bought a PS3 as a media centre/blu-ray player, and have bought around twenty blu-rays (well, bought, including the five free ones!). I think the PS3 strategy by Sony may be a winning one. There are some 5 or 6 million of the ps3's out now worldwide, and outside of North America the software sales are clearly in favour of blu-ray. I think the PS3 is the reason.
