Rough cost of amplifier repair?

I'm looking at this 2ch amplifier. If you read the description, it appears to blow the fuse.

I got this email from the seller. "The amp runs fine on the left side. Blows 8 amp fuse on the right. Cause? Don't know! Cost? Don't know! Now my guess on this- defective power amplifier transistors? some ground fault in the power supply? a short somewhere? Wish I knew, but this is not my field, and I won't attempt a repair without training. Thanks for your interest!"

Idea what it would cost to repair it? I'd like to bite but don't want to sink money into a dud.

Hard to say until you get into it. How about a new amp? What will you use it for?

I'm actually thinking about going fully separate. I don't want to part with my Yamaha 6060 at the moment. I am fine with the preamp, but the amp section is terrible. The soundstage feels like it's behind my speakers. I was thinking about adding a 2ch poweramp to the fronts, and use the Yamaha's power for the rest and maybe slowly start adding additional amps for the center and surrounds.

My budget is really max $300 for a 2ch poweramp with at least 150w@8ohm.

Buying that amp isnt the best idea, the thing is that the seller most likely knows full well whats wrong with the amp & is aware of repair costs, imagine if the amp was yours, wouldnt you get a repair estimate before dumping it?

Dont ever believe what you read on ebay,in my experience sellers with experience who list amps as being untested, cords cut off, tubes missing ect are liars, they count on people's greed & wanting to score a sweet deal, this guy's feedback shows a pattern of denial, inaccurate desrciptions & hard to contact when auctions go bad,are you sure you want to deal with this guy?

The reserve price alone is nut's,did you read that his reserve is $199.00 for a broken amplifier ,i could see if this amp was rare of worth fixing but at his reserve price plus the cost of repairs you could easily get a brand new amp from Crown,Alesis,Behringer ect.

With your budget of $300 it will be easy enough to find a great amp, look on http://www.audiogon.com/ using the zip code search function, keep looking on ebay using the nearest first feature & if they both fail go to your local guitar center & buy a new amp.

Pass on this one. You're better off getting something that works instead of trying to fix this one.

You should really be looking at used amplifiers for great value, so you have the right idea. Used pro amplifiers that actually work are a good bet, home audio amplifiers from Denon, Yamaha, Adcom, Pioneer, tons of brands. Some of the Yamaha home audio amplifiers and the Onkyos keep up with stuff costing a lot more new than they do used.:)

You need to look elsewhere for soundstage changes, like speakers, speaker location, room acoustics or the music material itself, not the amp. Channel balance fo the amp?

But, that Behringer suggested is a great little amp.

I would say the average cost of repairing an amp is $125, and the range is $100 - $300.

Thanks guys. I'll stay away from that one. I was secrectly wishing about getting the Emotiva LPA-1, which I may hold off for the time being and get it once I replace my Yamaha with possibly a HDMI 1.3 Pre/processor next year.
