POLK AUDIO R300

They are on sale right now for 50 each at FRYS.com

I'm a beginner.

I don't even have a sub yet, but I have onkyo 605 and I have polk bookshelf speakers right now, i believe they are the polk r150s

so, at that price, should I take the plunge?

It looks as if the R150 and R300 have the same driver compliment. The lager cabinet will give you 10 Hz of bass extension. The R300 has an F3 of 55 Hz which is not spectacular, and the R150 is 65 Hz. They are both vented so will both roll off fourth order (24db/octave) I doubt you will notice much difference from the R150s you have.

You could keep the R150s as surrounds and use the R300s for left and right. At that money you are not out much. I think they are clearing these out, I think both are discontinued models.

You could move up to 7.1.:)

That is a good deal, IMO.

Well, that's what I was thinking. I have one R150 sitting in a box. So you're suggesting I get the speakers, and move the current r150 and use them for a 7.1 set up

or should I spend some money and finally get a subwoofer...I'm goin on 5 months w/o sub.

You should get a subwoofer, and don't get a Polk subwoofer.:D

If you plan on keeping those speakers and like them, I would buy the Polk speakers now. I don't see those in Polk's current offerings. If you snap them up now, your speakers will match. You can get the sub later.

I don't understand what you are talking about. I'm new to sound and HT. I mean, I obviously know enough to come to a forum like this...but I'm confused with the language and terms...

I'm leaning towards buying the set though...and then saving up for a good sub. People have told me to get the x sub.

He is saying that the Polks at Fry's don't go much deeper in bass compared to the Bookshelf speakers you already have. The Bookshelf speakers you have use the same tweeter and woofer as the Floorstanding Polks you are looking at getting, a slight edge in tighter cleaner bass will probably go to the Bookshelf Polks you already have, but the bass won't be quite as deep.

Alright, I guess I should get the floorstanding ones, and then extend my setup as a 7.1

That is what most people are saying with this, and apparently, it's a really good deal...

As for the sub, I wanted to get the x sub...but shipping costs so much...

FRYS here I come.
