H/K 930 Questions Please

Hi! I bought a 'new' HK930 'Twin Powered', last week for $70.00 :D.

Questions: 1. The unit is covered by a substantial wooden case ('fixed'), which looks ok, I suppose. Is this Kosher? 2. Two of the knobs are non-standard - are the correct ones obtainable? 3. The left channel keeps 'coming and going' (suddenly, not a fade) and the tuner is very noisy when in motion/ selecting stations (with FM mute 'on' or 'off'); and I can get a crackle from the speakers by touching the 'second connector' of the antenna to any metal part. Could some kind of 'short' be happening?

It probably needs it's '33-year' service!

Please note: The tuner can pick up some pretty remote stations; and THE SOUND IS SOOOOO COOOOOL!

Cheers, og.

PS: The pics are too big - is there another way of uploading or do I have to 'reformat' to reduce file-size? :):):)

'vintage', Anyone?

Thanks mazersteven, I'm actually a member there, trying to get some information from guys that post regularly on older equipment. Reading their comments was what prompted me to join 'these' forums!

I am truly blown away by the quality of 2-channel sound that's available for under $100.00 - and it is really fun (for the likes of moi) to troll around junk-shops, second-hand 'stereo' stores, 'Goodwill' stores, etc. and do a little bargaining, to boot.

There were some very innovative ideas on how to (attempt to) get 'better-and-better' sound in the late sixties/ early seventies, weren't there.

Have we (AH) ever explored the concept of creating a 'Vintage Audio' Group or does that tend to detract from the 'A/V/HT' premis??

Cheers, og.

Hi OG,

The wooden cases were very common and are not an issue.

Keep looking and you'll find knobs some where some time. (vintage audio guys
keep lots of parts from trashed components)

Sounds like the unit is dirty and the electrical connections need to be cleaned. (pots and the like) I'll bet the balance pot is dirty and once clean the left channel wont come in and out. (same happened to me on my HK6500 sprayed radio shack "control/contact cleaner & lubricant" into the pot and she was as good as new.)

33 year service is due for sure. Electronics are dust magnets and need to be cleaned inside and out when they get older. After cleaning the unit then go back and check every thing again to see what problems may be left.

AudioKarma is a great site for this sort of thing the guys there are passionate and helpful.

Let us know how things work out,

Agreed, it's a great way for anyone with low funds to pick-up a cheap nice sounding system.

I bought a Pioneer SX-838 (50wpc stereo receiver) for $35.00 and a pair of Ohm Model C's speakers for $6.00. (both vintage approx. 1973-1975) That's a great shop/garage/basement system for $41.00 plus tax. It can't compete with new technology for critical listening but sounds great other wise.

As for AH going "vintage"...I think the eyes here are on the present and future. (as the should be)

Hey STRONGBADF1 thank you - you've hit my major questions right on the head!

I guess it's 'horses-for-courses', with where one can find vintage (or any other) specializations. There are guys who do not specialize in the big 'V' who know more about that subject than I will in another 20 years. So I'll ask wherever and whenever; and accept the gifts that I receive and am receiving.

Is there anywhere that I can read-up on any small 'history' of the use of wooden cases or are these more or less 'cases' of scattered one-off situations??

Cheers, og.

OG,

I don't know of any but I'm no expert.:)

Good luck,
