Denon AVR-3808CI Receiver Review

So I got a new toy, the Denon 3808 A/V receiver, and I'm proud to report very happy with it. I thought I would write some quick impressions for those trying to make a similar decision.

I'll start by saying that CNET's review is spot on. I happened to buy this Wednesday of last week and their review was released on Friday, so I had a little time to play with it prior to reading their impressions.

The Bad:

Complicated: This receiver is much much much more complicated to operate than my previous Denon 2800. I thought setting up everything on the 2800 was very easy and intuitive, at least for those who had prior A/V experience. This one has menu upon menu, and its not always clear how your change will effect other settings on the receiver. Bear in mind, I'm still learning it, and I'm picking up knew things every day. It's just frustrating at times. Not so much that I'd even consider returning it, I was just very surprised.

Front Panel Layout: Granted most people will use the remote to make changes, but there are plenty of times when I want to make a quick change on the fly from the front panel. Unfortunately, the only prominent buttons/switches are as follows: power, source, and volume. The panel on my 2800 was pretty spartan too, but it had a major feature the 3808 doesn't have. A scroll wheel to select the surround mode. I know this doesn't sound like much, but I listen to 2 channel music in direct and TV programing in DPL II or DTS Neo. And I listen to music from the TV. Very inconvenient to change from the panel. Granted there are buttons to do it, but they are tiny and you really can't read the labels.

Remote Control: I normally hear this as a knock against most products and roll my eyes. Most remotes, while not perfect, are fine for their intended usage. The 2800 remote, while boxy, sporting terrible ergonomics, and not a very good universal remote, controlled the unit fairly well. This Denon remote with the gel screen is just plain bad. So bad in fact I find myself using the second zone remote the unit came with. I will probably buy a harmony in the future so no big deal, but it's worth mentioning.

The Good:

Sound performance: In one word, phenomenal! Bear in mind I'm only using the amplification for rear channels, so this is mostly a processor and preamp upgrade for me. Wow!!! I wasn't expecting this kind of jump in performance. I was at a place where all the extra features made it worth while to upgrade, e.g. HDMI switching, up conversion, new surround formats, the list goes on. Any performance upgrade was just a bonus. What I noticed is that the bass management and implementation was light years ahead of my old processor. As a result, my sub has never sounded this good and never integrated into my system this good. Channel separation is also much much better. I noticing all kinds of rear effects that I didn't get before. Bear in mind that I'm upgrading from a 7 year old receiver. Some of you who have a 3806 or 3805 I'm sure won't come to the same conclusions, as you already have a great machine. But for me, it was a big improvement.

Up conversion: DVD's do look significantly better. I do not have an up converting player, so for those of you who have an Oppo or something similar, I'm sure this isn't a big deal for you. But if you didn't buy a new DVD player like myself, it was a very nice feature to have. I don't have a 1080p display and as such haven't tried to use the unit's deinterlacing, which CNET says is poor.

Audessy: A breeze to set up and I really think it does help when playing movies decoded with DD or DTS. I don't use it when listening to 2 channel sources.

HDMI switching: I'm happy to report I plugged everything in and it worked from the get go. No handshake issues of any kind. It works perfectly with my satellite box which is hooked up with a DVI-D to HDMI cable. Additionally no issues with the Xbox 360.

Well that about wraps it up. If you have any questions, I'm happy to respond. Please note I haven't networked it yet, but I'm sure I will soon.

Sincerely,

Bru

Nice write up:). I remember when I upgraded to my 3805 it was like:eek:. Having read comments pertaining to Denons pre/amp section there is a definite improvement in SQ from the 3... and up.:)

Thanks Billy!

I thought I would add one more thing. The ability to have a dedicated 2 channel set up is a huge feature. For example, my mains are set to large in my 2 channel set up for music, but for any surround application, they are set to small. I really like this feature.

I bought a 3805 a few years ago, but stupidity got the best of me, and I fell for a 4306. Moved the '05 to the living room, the '06 took over the HT duties. Don't ask my why, but I love this stuff. Told my wife they were $50 each.

The best thing about my 3808 is the sound quality and the connectivity options. I love the fullness and warm sound it produces. That is decodes the new HD sound formats is a bonus, and having 3 zones was a must for me.

The dislikes are the video processing problems on HDMI I have encountered. This definately needs some work.

I'm pleased with the receiver overall, but I can't recommend it to anyone who intends to run video through it until Denon fixes the HDMI problems.

Just the other day I was watching T2 with my kids through the xbox360 elite and the picture start flickering. At first I thought it was the xbox, so I shut it down and restarted, but same thing. Then I shut off and restarted the Denon and the flickering stopped. Later in the day I was watching Spiderman 2 and the flickering returned. I again restarted the Denon and again the picture returned to normal. My Denon is on open AV shelf with plenty of clearance, and although it gets warm to touch, ventillation is not the issue.

I didn't expect these types of issues from Denon, especially for the cost of this receiver.

I'm actually rather surprised by this. I run all my video sources through the 3808, and I haven't had any problems at all. When did you buy yours and have you upgraded the firmware? Mine has exhibited none of these problems. From reading the various boards, upgrading the firmware on many units purchased in Sept and Oct. has really helped.

I purchased mine on 10/27.

My most recent problem with the Denon is it won't handshake over HDMI to my Oppo 980 DVD player at 1080p. I am now thinking the problem is more oriented to this high def resolution over HDMI than anything else.

The Denon seems to have a problem with 1080p over HDMI, but seems to handle lower resolutions (including 1080i) much better. 1080p input from my XBOX or from my Oppo seems to cause it to break-up, flicker, drop picture, etc.

Last night I did a firmware update on the Denon, and it actually seemed to make things worse. Now it won't handshake at all with my Oppo at 1080p resolution, where before the update it would hold the signal for a few seconds at a time before flickering out.

I'd like to hear from others that are inputting and outputting 1080p on HDMI with this receiver to see if this is consistent, or just a problem with my receiver.

I can't help there. I have a 37" 720P set, so I don't do anything with the higher resolutions. My satellite box does all the up conversion for TV watching. I actually wish I knew how to turn it off, but I think it's an all or nothing proposition on this box. For my DVD, it outputs 480P and the Denon does a great job of up converting to 720P.

solomr2 - If I were you, I'd call Denon support. From what I have heard, they are fairly good at documenting problems and trying to fix them in firmware update. Additionally, maybe you have a unit that needs serviced? I sure hope not, but I would give them a call

On another note, watching Borne Ultimatum, I just can't get over the surround sound. My old receiver didn't sound like this:)

Well, with firmware updates from Denon and from Oppo it seems the problem has mostly been fixed. I have been providing updates in this thread with more details;
http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37768

It's not 100% fixed, it still seems to give me an occasional flicker and drops picture here and there. I haven't yet had the time to test all the sources and all resolutions, but this is a vast improvement over what I was getting before.

In all, there were 15 firware updates from Denon, and one from Oppo.

I think it's awesome to have a receiver that you can upgrade the firmware in the comfort of your home. Given the problems all these units have been having with HDMI, I think it's a huge + to have that feature.

A quick update:

I wanted to go pure digital, so i bought a cheap Philips DVD player with an HDMI out. All I wanted to do was send a 480i signal in pure digital to the denon and let it up convert it. Unfortunately, I did run into an HDMI handshake issue. The Philips wouldn't play through HDMI. It had no problem direct into my display, but it wouldn't play with the receiver in the chain.

I went out and bought a cheap Sorny player (A Simpsons joke from long ago for those in the know. I can never say Sony without thinking Sorny.). No HDMI problems whatsoever. Picture looks fantastic. Not a big improvement over my old Yamaha player, but improved nonetheless.

I still can't get over the fidelity on this guy. And what a difference Audyssey makes.
