Improving MP3 SOund Quality

I need some education in this area. Like many people, I play the digitized music library on my iPod through my home stereo system. Now that I am contemplating upgrading my home system, I am curious whether I might be able to restore the lost quality of my music that is played from the compressed format on my iPod.

If this issue has been exhausted on this forum, please point to toward any relevant threads. Thank you.

There is no actual way to add quality to your mp3s as it has already been lost. Your best bet is to re-rip the CDs to a lossless format such as wav or flac. If you bought them online via iTunes or something like that unfortunately you are out of luck.

If you decide to re-rip your CDs you can always store them on a separate PC using a lossless format or just uncompressed all together. I have an airport express connected to my receiver via mini toslink -> toslink cable and use itunes to stream the music. Since HDDs are cheap nowadays I just rip my CDs in full uncompressed format (AIFF). Sounds just as good as a cd player connected directly to the receiver.

The benefit to this is that with itunes I can control what song to play through the receiver using any laptop, PC, and even my wife's iphone as well. Not just by the one which has all the songs in it.

Good suggestion. Can I convert MP3 files (downloaded from the iTunes store & stored in my iTunes library) to AIFF & actually restore the lost quality from the MP3 format? Or is the quality lost forever at the time I downloaded the songs in MP3 format?

Thank you for your suggestion.

You can convert them to AIFF or WAV if you are using Windows but you cannot get back what was lost.
