Well, my old Sony DVD player broke last night, so it's time to enter the world of HD! I know very little, and hope I've find a home and a great place to start learning! The first words of advice to me were: get an Oppo DVD player for now - never heard of it! :p

Wish me luck! :)

Well an Oppo is not HD.:p It is just an upconverter for SD DVD.
Honestly, I would save my money and get a real HD player, now just for you to choose HD DVD or BD.

But there is plenty of time to talk about that.;)

Welcome to the forums, certainly you will find all your answers here (regarding HT).:)

Yes, welcome.
Since you are thinking about Hi-Def, what size TV do you have and its capability in resolution wise? Or, perhaps you are upgrading that too if need be?

If you have an HDTV it's real tough not to go with a cheap HD DVD player right now. For $199 you get a decent upconverting player as well and Netflix has the movies. I'll recommend Blu-ray as well when the price drops.
