Rear center channel speaker question

Hello everyone,
First I want to wish everyone Happy Holidays
Now my question about rear channel speaker placement.
we live in a home where the previous owners had put some speakers up in a vaulted ceiling but they are off center from where I want to set up my television (to far to the right and I am not wanting to run wire or drill holes for new speaker placement at this time ) although the speaker that is closest to the center of the room is in a decent location for a rear center speaker. What is everyone’s thought if I were to just go with a 4.1 setup instead of a 5.1 setup (front left, center, and right, with one rear center channel)? We have an Onkyo TX-SR 600 receiver that has the option of a center rear speaker

Sorry for being so long winded

I say forget the rear speaker until you can do it right. JMO

Is that Onkyo a 6.1/7.1 unit? I think the single center is likley for 6.1 rather than 7.1. If this is the case then you still need two surrounds.

The set up for 5.1 is the surrounds, JUST BEHIND the listening position. 6.1, there is on center back in the rear of the room as well. 7.1 has two center backs.

SACD, does not use the surrounds, but the rear channels should be directed to the two center backs.

Thanks for the quick replys

The Onkyo is 6.1 not 7.1

It gives me the option to shut off the left and right rear channels but still have the center rear on

Are you sure about that? On mine, if you set surrounds=none you don't get the option to set the rear surrounds.

How far off center? I'd say go ahead and hook 'em up. What do you have to lose. Once you calibrate the speaker levels, it might be ok.
