Does the Denon DVD-2930CI play HD or blue ray disc? If it doesn't why the 1080P output, unless there are regular dvd movies that have a 1080P signal.

No, it doesn't play either of the two new formats. When it says 1080p output, it means that the player is able to upscale the DVD to that resolution. Upscaling is usually (but not always) best done by players, which is why upscaling players are so popular, and why Denon advertises it this way. ALL DVDs are 480i.

cheers,

You need the $800 Samsung BD-UP5000 Combo HD DVD + Blu-ray player, which will send DTS-HD MA & TrueHD Bitstream to your Denon 3808 for awesome sound.

SO I will keep
DVD-2910 for SACD
PS3 for Gaming
and get this Samsung BD-UP5000 combo for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies playback. It should look pretty good with the panny-2000U in full 1080P
right!!!

The PS3 can play SACD as well...(as long as it isn't a 40G). Multichannel SACD would require a receiver with HDMI though. The only thing you would be missing is DVD-A and HD DVD.

You got it!

And please let us know if DTS-MA sounds significantly better than DTS-Core.

Is there a noticeable difference between DTS and DTS HD?

Hey TechGuy can you elaborate a bit more on the 2 DTS's?
Thanks
Well, there are THREE DTS's!!!

1) DTS-Core (Plain DTS, 1.5 Mbps)
2) DTS-HD HR (High Resolution, some compression, I think 6.9 Mbps)
3) DTS-HD MA (Master Audio-lossless, no compression, I think > 20 Mbps)

It seems that DTS & DTS-HR are very easy to implement. But apparently the DTS-MA is very difficult. As of today, you can only get DTS-MA on a few blu-ray players via Bitstream (send to your receiver to decode DTS-MA). None of the players can internally decode DTS-MA.

There are THREE High Definition Audio formats:

1) Uncompressed PCM (no compression, does NOT require Decoding)
2) Dolby TrueHD (no compression, But Requires Decoding)
3) DTS-HD MA (no compression, But Requires Decoding)

You can get the first 2 on any HD players.

These 3 new HD Audio are like the exact quality of the original Master Audio. The sound is suppose to be better quality than the standard Dolby Digital and DTS.

In the end, it all depends on the actual soundtrack of the movie. If it is great, like Day After Tomorrow, Ratatouille, etc., then the sound will be great in all audio formats.

Examples:

"300" blu-ray: I've compared Uncompressed PCM vs TrueHD vs Dolby Digital. I find it very difficult to distinguish among the 3 audio tracks.

"Superman Returns" HDDVD: I've compared TrueHD vs Dolby Digital. I find very little difference in quality.

"Kung Fu Hustle" Blu-ray: I've compared Dolby Ditial vs PCM: Huge difference. Uncompressed PCM was significantly better than Dolby Digital.

So it varies.

But bottom line, if you have DTS-MA, TrueHD, & PCM, you are getting the Best Possible Sound.

Right now, DTS-MA is difficult for most people to get. I can't get it yet until they make a HD player with internal DTS-MA decoders. But if you have the new Onkyo or Denon receivers (I would get the Onkyo 875 by the way:D) & the upcoming Samsung BD-UP5000 combo player, you can get all three HD Audio formats via Bitstream (your receiver will decode).

Is there a noticeable difference between DTS and DTS HD?
Fox, LionsGate, & MGM like to use DTS-MA: Day After Tomorrow, X-Men 3, Alien Vs Predator, & Die Hard 4 are a few examples of DTS-MA.

I think Day After Tomorrow & Die Hard 4 soundtracks are so awesome that you would not be able to hear a significant difference between DTS & DTS-MA. I mean just the DTS-Core of these 2 movies would blow away most of the TrueHD & PCM soundtracks out there. So it varies.

I'm sure on some movies, you will hear a significant improvement with DTS-MA. But on others you will not hear a significant improvement.

Oh, and one more thing. DTS-MA, TrueHD, & PCM are capable of 7.1 Uncompressed Audio.

DTS-HR is capable of 7.1 Compressed Audio.

DTS, DTS ES, DD, DD EX, DD Plus are only capable of 5.1 COMPRESSED audio.

Every one of these schemes utilizes compression. It's simply a matter of that compression being lossless or not. If DTS-MA didn't compress anything, then there would be no need for it; you could just use PCM. The difference is that the standard DTS and Dolby compressions are lossy (like MP3) while the newer versions are lossless (like ZIP and RAR).
