Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forums and to the Home theater scene, I've had several HTIB's but they just don't satisfy me. So I'm looking foward to buy a home theater system and looking for some help! I've read some of the forums here and you guys suggested the ONKYO 805 and the 875, whats the main difference between the two? Also, I don't really have a set limit on how much I would like to put in. I was thinking of getting a av reciever and two front speakers for now? and build it from there. any suggestions would help, excited to see what you guys can suggest, thanks! :D

mainly for movies and music, overall great clear speakers. speakers that will give the theater experience. the onkyo 805 and 875 are both great investments? thanks for the advice.

yeah, half and half. should it be aimed towards one thing rather than two? its gonna go with my 46` sharp lcd 1080p in my bedroom for now.

i'd prefer home theater over music, but I wouldn't mind having the speakers for both.

The difference in the 2, is the video processing, if you even need it.
If you have average video players, and are looking for MUCH better video conversion, then the 875 is your ticket.
If you have, or are happy with, your current video players (DVD, HD DVD, BD, etc players), then the 805 is your ticket.
On the audio side of things, from my understanding, the 2 are equal.

I do plan on getting the 805, as soon as finances allow for it.

What kind of budget are we talking about for the speakers? Do you want towers that dig fairly deep into the bass so you can save for the sub or bookshelves and a sub? I've got a few suggestions on both counts;

I own the the T45s which is a very neutral sounding speaker and it does really well in both HT and music.

On a higher end;

Don't let the single bass driver fool you into thinking they can't do bass. These speakers will put many a speaker with multi-bass drivers to shame.

ONKYO 805 vs 875:

Also, I don't really have a set limit on how much I would like to put in. I was thinking of getting a av reciever and two front speakers for now? and build it from there.
The biggest difference to me is that the Onkyo 875 is 140 wpc, has 1080p Video Upscaler, 4 HDMI inputs, & costs $1,300. The 805 is 130 wpc, no 1080p Upscaler, 3 HDMI inputs, & costs $900. Is the Onkyo-875 worth the $400 difference? I don't think so IMO.

You definitely need to audition speakers, preferably in your own home (free return policy if don't like). Only you can judge whether a pair of speakers are good or bad.

It is very true that, like all things, speaker Frequency Response (FR) in general are only a tiny part of the story. It is also true, however, that excellent speakers will have excellent FR.

I recommend the Definitive Technology BP10B tower speakers for $900/pair. They are 42" tall, high quality build, & are Bipolar design. Their F.R. is 20Hz-20kHz +/-6dB & 25Hz-20kHz +/-3dB (90dB Reference) according to Julian Hirsch & Stereo Review Lab. They are 6 ohms speakers, & either Onkyo models will play them just fine.

nice, thanks guys. i'll definately try out those speakers. budget is around 2,000-2,500 for the reciever and the speakers. I want to expand it later in the future , maybe in a couple of months. where should i get the cables? any site that sells cables for a decent price?

I have not bought from them in a few years, but Westlake use to be the cheapest around for the same speaker cables that bluejeans sells. (granted, you will have to terminate them yourself = about 5 minutes per cable.)
If you are handy, I would even recommend terminating your own RCA cables (much better quality, for a 1/3 of the price.)
Let me see if I can find that old link......
Ahh here it is, Westlake Electronics.;)

I bought ~250 feet of 12awg from them, and ~150 feet 10awg for pennies, but I have not checked their prices in quite some time.

You have to choose mains first.

Subwoofer yes for HT. For 2 channel music no. For multi-channel music yes.
