1/2 Baked Panel

Due to WAF I'm never going to have acoustical panels. My question is about taking a regular painting and putting a 1" Owens Corning 705? insulation panel in between it and the wall. Would that do anything or just waste my time and money.

Some painting are framed with a cavity. The wife would allow me to add a mahogany trim frame extention with which I could create a 1 1/2" cavity.

I have managed to poo-poo all glass covered paintings but my paintings react just like glass to the finger tap test.

I dont think you will gain much unless you can breath through the paintings.

Andrew (avaserfi) has some great ideas on how to make your own that look somewhat like art. PM him and ask for his help.

Hey it's the other unemployed guy! I saw his thread and pics in this forum. If it doesn't look like a Tuscan hillside I can forget it due to the old waf. I'll PM him a little later.

My thought was that it would keep sound from comming off the wall in that one spot.

Edit: And from going into the wall in that one spot. Maybe keeping the wall from transmitting everything possible into the corners.

You are RIGHT. The front has to be opened celled to let the higher frequencies in.
It is funny you should bring up the WAF, as while I was out at the RMAF I had a few drinks (ok not a few BUT A LOT) with some guys and the question come up to me, "Glenn build us a panel and or bass trap that my wife will love". When I got back I started in on this project and have come up with 2 things.

1) A panel that has hand crafted wood frames to them, with GOM as the frabric.
2) A bass trap that is a "pillar" that is all trimmed out in wood with wood tops and bottoms. Also with GOM fabric.

Not to get way off topic, but what do you guys think?

Glenn, those sound like they could fill the niche of pre-built really nice looking acoustic treatments that many are looking for.

As far as anyone who is looking for a good looking acoustic treatment on the "cheap" my suggestion (with the help of WmAx) to Greg a long while ago involved using faced OC705 and a natural fabric (think wool) thick tapestry with loose stitching on the back. You would need to adhere the OC705FRK to the back of the tapestry with the faced side facing the fabric and then hang the tapestry on the wall. The tapestry will take care of the higher frequencies allowing for the OC705 to work on the lower ones.

This was complete speculation, but with the proper tapestry should work and pass pretty much any WAF if you can find a tapestry she likes after all any sign of treatments will be hidden completely.

The pillar thing sounds like it might fly. I don't know what GOM stands for. If the fabric had some sort of artistic images or maybe even geometric shapes and interesting colors and shading, that might fly as well. It's easier to to get away with a pillar in a corner than a 30"X36" wall hanging.

I already told my wife that I really needed to drill a bunch of little hole in the painting she just bought, for acoustical purposes. I love to torture her.

I think Greg was referring to the tapestry idea. I am not entirely sure where one would go to buy them though I would look online for vendors both local and ID, but I doubt Jo-Anne would sell them or if they did they wouldn't be too nice.

Another option which could possibly work is this one. The company actually prints a picture on the panel so it would be exactly what you are looking for. I don't know how well they work or how much they cost and haven't really heard much about them, but it would be worth looking into if it is your only option. I will warn you regular screen printing will not work for acoustic treatments so don't go looking for that.

I have a couple of offers now but want to check out a couple more options before I accept anything.

I have pretty much given up on room treatments; maybe someday they will make some that passes the WAF.

If someone would just make something that looks like white canvas and has a circle or square on it; I could probably get away with it. She paid like 400 bucks for a 4x4 canvas that has a square on it!

Thanks for the reply but that link didn't work. I'm gonna have to find some nice tapestries locally as I don't really trust eBay that far. I'd loose my mind if I bought spray painted burlap from some guy in Iowa for $129 + S+H.

I'm glad to be able to get my original idea right out of my head. Thanks.

You go ahead and start without me. I'm good here. LOL! I pulled a muscle in my shoulder a couple of days ago and further aggrivated the situation by doing a little painting and trying to skim coat some walls here. I need a little time to heal and a little more time to finish up. But you get right out there. You've got nice stuff so when you go to upgrade it's really gonna cost.

Do you have to use your own paintings? You just send these guys an image and they can make you a panel with it. Looks great too. Don't know how much they cost though.

They are out to lunch at the moment. A call to a Jill in about 15 minutes ought to give me a ball park figure for how much these things go for. I can tell it ain't gonna be cheap. The wife would actually let me spend a grand on a rieceiver that I don't need so this might fly.

30"X36" panel with me suppying a digital image would be somewhere in between $600 - $1200. That # came up with me having told him that I might be interested in as many as 5 similar sized panels.

The fabric alone with an image on it would be $300 - $400 a piece.

I'll need to find a digital image of that old Haulin' A$$ poster.
