Aperion Intimus 422 for my living room TV/stereo?

I'm just stepping my way into the world of home audio from way of car audio (sq, not boom boom). I'm a music lover by nature and am on my way to learning more about home audio. For now, being a student has limited me and what I can do. Right now I'm just trying to get good stereo sound for movies/tvs/cds.

I'm on a pretty limited budget and I really like the 422's for my purpose. My room is about 10' deep and 15' long.

Anyone have opinions on these? I see alot of reviews on the 522 & 6xx series, but can't find much on the 422's. I'm really trying to figure out if the small drivers will be enough for my room or if I should really consider stepping up to something larger.

I plan to mate them with a 10" Dayton powered subwoofer. This room is going to have a pretty low budget system, which is fine by me. I will be building a house in early '09 and plan to dedicate some time/budget to a theater room then, but for now this will have to get a college student through.

The equipment I currently have is:
Denon AVR-587
Samsung 50" DLP

I appreciate any help.

My budget was originally $150 for a pair as this was going to be a gift from my wife for Christmas. I realized that maybe that was being a bit too conservative, so I'm going to throw in another $50 so I can get those. Also, I figured that if I want to upgrade I can to the 522's later.

And yes, those are the exact ones I'm considering.

I've heard a lot of good things of Aperion speakers.

Instead of $200/pr of satellite speakers, I would rather get towers for $240/pr:

I've heard a lot of good things of AV123 speakers.

The Aperion 532 satellite speakers for $180 ea?
I, too, have heard good things. I just haven't seen much about the 422's.

I think the above may be out of my budget by about $50. With Christmas being so tight, I don't know if I can swing another $50 atm. Which is one reason why I liked those Aperions.

Budget bookshelf speakers

I think the Onix X-ls from av123 are still available for $165/pair. I would pick up a pair of these or another larger bookshelf speaker so you can have a lower crossover with the sub and better music performance. Most bookshelf speaker will also play louder than satellite speakers.

So that's the main purpose of those speakers? Satellite? If so, then I'll definately look toward something else.

With Aperion's line I had assumed that any one driver could be used in any one location. I guess that's something I need to learn more about for future HT designing.

Thanks. I'll look into the avs123 speakers and see what I can find out about them.

In the meantime...while I am it. Are there any good floorstands that I could get for those? Better yet, does avs make a good tower for around that same budget?

Speaker stands will cost you at least another $50-$100/pr.
I would just get that pair of tall towers from AV123 for $240 and not worry about speaker stands.

^ Those are nice. I'll have to check the budget (see: the wife) to see what it looks like.

On another, though similar, topic. The Aperions & avs speakers are cheap in price. IN the car audio world, cheap in price can also mean cheap in quality, though with companies like Seas, and Dayton making good budget speakers it's somewhat easy to piece together a nice setup. The same follows for home audio, however, the other factors of built in passive crossover & materials (wood, etc) work into the cost. So, what might cost me $200 to build is $100 via aperion or avs. Do you guys feel that either of these companies have sacrificed quality for these specific speaker systems or is the quality still good?

Looked into the tower AVS's. They appear to be the same as the bookshelf's but differ only in the size (thus effecting bass FR). So, I suppose it's just a matter of deciding if I want to make due with some sort of stand on my own or spend roughly $70 more to get these speakers which act as a stand as well.

Decisions, decisions...

I've never listened to AV123, but I've heard nothing but good things, just like Aperions.

I've had bookshelf/monitor speakers before, and I prefer towers a lot more.
It's not just the additional stands. You get better bass from towers due to the physical attributes.

Like I bought my DefTech SM450 monitors for $300 each. Then I bought speaker stands for $125/pr. Total = $725/pr. Why, Oh why did I do that? I could have bought the BP10Bs for the same amount of money and get MUCH better Bass. Excuse me while I go out the parking lot and kick myself in the A$$.

If you keep an eye out on Frys.com, every once and a while they have the Polk R50's blowing out at $49 a pop. This is a tower speaker with a TMM arrangement (Tweeter, Mid-Woofer, Mid-Woofer).

Alot of bang for the buck. They appear to be back to $68 per. They should sound good too :)

Aperion sacrifices nothing in terms of quality, the 422's are just small. And remember to keep the packing material, as you can trade them in on some bigger speakers for up to a year. The Piano Black is what I have, and its stunning.

With a Dayton and some 422's you may have to set your crossover at 100 Hz, as the 422's have a 4" mid bass driver.

Which I don't necessarily mind doing. I'm just not a fan of having midbass come out of a subbass speaker. But, in this instance with my budget that may just be something I have to accept.

In my car my subwoofer is crossed at 53hz with an 18db slope and midbasses are crossed at 63hz with a 24db slope. There's a night and day difference crossing midbass/subbass at 100hz, that I hope won't transpire into the home audio realm.

*shrugs* I've got a decision on my hands... the agony!

Oh, and I love the piano black in pictures...bet it's even nicer in person!

I'ts really looking that way.

Think I may ask my folks about letting me half my x-mas present with them so I can get the tower speakers though. Otherwise I'm stuck buying speaker stands that are going to be at least another $50.

Right when I had decided to buy the x-ls towers a guy on a car audio forum threw up these av123 Orion's . He said he would do $165 shipped for them.

But, I'm still back to having to figure something out on getting them off the ground...

so, is this such a good deal that I should take it and buy stands or... ?
