I am interested in the Polk's MONITOR70BK because a large retailer has buy 1 get the 2 one at 1/2 off. I am looking to spend no more than $700 or so for a pair of good floorstanding speakers. I am looking to purchase the Onkyo TX-SR605S 7.1 receiver to power the speakers as this has received good reviews.

Any other recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I'd check out the now, old RTI series too as you can get them at a pretty big discount now that the RTI-A series has been released. Find a store locally that carries them if you can and give them a listen to.

That is what I was going to say. The RTi's should be around the same price, and IMO double the performance of the Monitor series

I greatly appreciate everyones replies. CC has them for $399 for 1 and the 2nd one is 1/2 ($600) total. I have looked at best buy (Klipsh and their other Magnolia brands). I am open to any other decent brands. I am interested mostly in a nice set for watching movies and classic/jazz music.

I think that I will try the Ascend acoustics with their 30 day return policy. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

And you could easily sell the Onix Reference 1 $499 for what you paid after the sale is over. Normally $1200.

And they too have a Rish Free Trial

Worried you won’t love the speakers unless you have the chance to hear them first? No problem! Order a pair of Reference 1 speakers and spend a month with them in your own home. If after 30 days you don’t love them, we will pay the shipping charges back to us, credit your original form of payment for the speakers AND the outbound shipping! (UPS GROUND only) This means the demo is no risk to you!

Hello, 11/27/07

I hope that my statment about my $50K "Avalon Acoustic" speaker system did not sound braggadocio. I was just trying to clarify a point that not all speakers are made alike and that I learned my lesson over the years purchasing speakers that were recommended by self motivated audio reviewers whom are paid by manufacturing companies for their reviews.
My Avalon Speakers:
Mains: Eidolon Diamond Premium
Center: Symbol Series Channel
Rears: Ascendant Premium
Sub: Symbol Series
I love the sound quality and clarity of these speakers. They were perfect to my ear (subjective of course).

Best Regards,
James

So when they say Kevlar Woofer & Diamond Tweeter, do they mean that the woofer is actually made out of bullet-proof kevlar and the tweeter is made of actual diamonds?

And are the speakers Tri-wire, Tri-amp capable?

They don't have a built-in subwoofer do they?

I noticed that the ultra high-end companies have FR specs like +/- 1dB or 1.5dB. But wouldn't the numbers look better if they also did a +/-3dB? Like say 24Hz @ -1.5dB, 20hz @ -3dB, 16Hz @ -6dB, etc.?

I asked Def Tech twice :D if they had any specs for +/- 1dB, or +/-6dB, or +/-10dB.
They said they only have the +/-3dB FR.:(

What Happened to My Post???
Apparently his post was deleted and as where our perfectly logical questions/remarks concerning the post (which made no sense). To be honest I am still not certain what the guy is driving at. Is he saying that regardless of our budgets we should just buy super high-end speakers? I simply don't understand.
