Hey all,

I was wondering what everyone thought about the new Yamaha RX-V1800? I was originally leaning towards the new Onkyos... but I keep hearing what seems like never ending complaints on them. But after looking at the V1800, I am liking what I see more and more. I especially like the compression corrections.

Anyone look at these yet?

That is my next move. Waiting on the price to drop.;)

I am considering the Integra dtc 9.8, since I do have amplification. If Yamaha offered a Pre, I would consider it first. I just like the brand.

I will be replacing my HK AVR235. I want HDMI and I would like a tad more power... and I don't want to wait:)

Anybody have one?

I just got one less than a week ago to replace my RX-V1600 and I absolutely love it. It's got a lot of the same features, but not all of them, but it also has some nice stuff the 1600 didn't have. I'm loving the 4 HDMI 1.3a inputs and the video scaling is decent, but I've only been using it with my Wii, since all my other inputs are HDMI. I got mine for just under $900 new on Ebay. I know that by not buying from an authorized dealer voids the warranty, but it's a chance I'm willing to take to save a few hundred dollars. But the overall quality of the Yamaha receivers is fantastic. It does run a bit on the warm side but it doesn't get too hot, although that could be due to the fact I'm only using it as a pre/pro and not utilizing any of the onboard amps. I would highly reccomend it to anyone looking to buy one. They are pretty easy to setup and it sounds great. The compressed music enhancer does make a difference too, which is one of the other features I was hoping would be useful, and so far it is since most all of the music on my HTPC is in .mp3 format.

I heard those integra 9.8s are wicked hard to get as in you have to wait forever

I am getting ready to purchase a V1800 and I have a very specific need for a feature called "lip synch". I would appreciate anyone who has used this feature to let me know if it works as intended. i use DirecTV fof HD programming, and the video falls behind the audio more often than not. "Lip synch" will auto correct this problem. One can manually delay the audio, but the delay varies from program to program, which requires constant adjustment. Thanks.

I find that it works well, but I also have it set to a manual delay of 53 milliseconds and found that to work best for me. It is a very nice receiver indeed, sound and vision magazine just did a review on it in their latest issue.

Thanks for the reply GR. I started a seperate thread for this topic and got two responses that basically show skepticism regarding the existence of the problem. I would much appreciate your observation of how your setting applies to different channels and different movies. The delay never seems to be the exactly the same. I'd love to purchase the V1800 this week with some confidence.

after reading this and the other thread, I decided to set the manual delay back to 0, and see what happens. I also had the automatica delay setting on the whole time, so maybe the manual setting that I used wasn't even being used at all. The only thing is, with my setup, I get my tv from over the air, so no video runs through the receiver, but the tv's audio is right on regardless. But I do have HD DVD and Bluray (PS3) players to test video lip sync on and so far they both seem to be correct, and I don't have any issues. I still need to try a standard def dvd to see if there is a lip sync delay due to the upconversion/video processing. I'll try to remember to do that this evening, if I don't see any issues there, I would say get the 1800 hands down. So far it has been every bit as good as my RX-V1600 and then some, even though it costs a bit more. I got mine on Ebay for just under $900 shipped, I figure the ~$300 savings was worth losing out on the mfg. warranty, since yamaha builds solid receivers, and my 1600 never gave me any problems. I also forgot to mention that my PC audio runs through the receiver and the video cable (VGA cable) is ran directly to the PC input on the tv, and there are no lip sync issues there either, so I don't know if the receiver is doing anything to correct a sync issue, or if there is no delay to begin with, but so far every source I've used seems to have no delay issues, so I would guess the receiver is doing it's job properly.

Thanks again GR. i very much doubt that any DVD player, SD or HD would have a synch issue. I use an off-air HD antenna combined with my DTV receivers also. There is an occasional disparity, but not enough to get aggravated over like on DTV. The main issue is with cable or satellite. I am surprised to see on this board that no one has experienced this.
I did have a long discussion with Yamaha tech dept. They know of the problem which is why they added the feature! The problem is, they test on controlled best case content rather than what most customers get.
I'll keep waiting for more responses.

This receiver has really caught my attention. I tested it at Best Buy with their speakers and it seemed a touch bright. I am comparing this to my Integra DTR-5 and an old Pioneer receiver that I've had for close to 20 years.

I currently have some Tannoy Mercury M5s as my mains with a PSB Image 8C as my center and a Mission 700ASI sub. It's nowhere near optimal (matching between the M5s and the 8C) but the M5s sound great to my ears for music.

Because I don't want to lug down my speakers and I don't plan on paying the full retail Best Buy sells them for I can't test the receiver with my speakers.

I know my speakers lean toward the warm end will they balance out the receiver?
