Hello,

I am new to home theater and have been building my system for the past two weeks. I am drawing a blank on subwoofers and finding there is a lot about them I do not understand. Thus I have been going off of listening to them to make my purchase.

I heard a Seismic 12 and loved it. However, I am told the Ultracube 12 is more or less the same subwoofer only with a lot less wattage. If this is true, how does that effect sound? It has been explained to me that it will limit how loud I can make the subwoofer. If that is the main thing then I am not too worried about it, I live in an apartment complex and I doubt I will be putting this sub into a very large room any time soon.

But I don't know. I am no expert and I am not even a novice. I am a newbie. Thus I wanted to ask someone with experience what they thought about my situation. My room dimensions are about 15' by 10' by 8ft'.

Any advice would be nice. Thanks!

I was less than impressed with the Paradigm subs for the money (except the Servo series) I would call SVS and HSU and tell them your room dimensions and see what they say you should get. If it were me; I would stick to SVS, HSU or Axiom for the sub.

Thanks guys. I will look into these people. What is it that you all love about these subs? I would love someone to give me their opinion in detail. I am looking primarily to do this for movies.

What would I be getting out of those subs over the paradigm? Thanks guys

This is my recommendation

I also recommend you e-mail SVS and ask Tom or Ron their opinion of what sub for your system. Tell them what you'll be using your system for. Give room dimensions, and room details. They will not over sell you, but guide you to the right sub.

SVS and HSU are internet subwoofer companies. Both have just recently started to sell speakers. But they are primarily known for their subs.

Both companies are active in the research, and development into the design, and production of both the drivers, and sub enclosures.

Money in your pocket....
and more sub in your home..

See my sig for my setup.. all paradigm..

PB13-Ultra kicks as hard, if not harder, than the Servo and it costs half as much. you can definitely get more BANG ( pun intended :) ) for the buck with any SVS :)

I will second what Greg said. Their subs are not impressive for the price with the exception of the Servo15. The 2200 is good also, but can be bested by the others mentioned at a lower price.

The reason I stick with HSU and SVS is because they typically cost less and I have yet to hear one that is anything short of awesome.

How many and what models have you heard?

I've heard a number of them and I'd have to say that is a safe bet. I've heard VTF-2 (owned), STF-2, VTF-3 mkII, PB-10 (owned), PB-12, 25-31, 20-39+, PB-13 Ultra and all of them were excellent subs and for the same price retail you get a LOT more for your money.

HSU: STF-1, STF-2, and a couple of the VTF series.
SVS: PB-10, PB12, PB13-Ultra (what a beast!)

All excellent. That's not to say there aren't any other subs out there just as good. I simply feel buying a sub from HSU or SVS is always a safe bet.

Thats awesome !!!! And so true...

If you want a beast of a sub, SVS now has the whole line of PB12-Plus/2's on closeout, $1099 !!!! I have one, and Plus in Piano Black...

Jump on the Plus/2 for the money, It will be hard to beat... and Looks fantastic !!! http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-plus2.cfm
That sub is a monster that will certainly shake your house....

Closeout! Save as much as $500 on units in stock, and now to be cleared from our burgeoning inventory entirely. One of the best subwoofers in the world for under $5,000 is on its way out. Largely replaced by its similarly-sized PB13-Ultra sibling, the Plus/2 has been a veteran of our lines for several years and recipient of more accolades than virtually any other sub in this affordable class. if you have always lusted after two PB12-Plus/2 subs for your large room (and need a mate for one you have), now is your time. Prices will never be lower, and when they are gone, they are likely gone forever. Classic SVS lines, Ohio-built quality and brutally powerful, achingly accurate bass simply doesn't get less expensive, and it's rarely as good even if you are considering spending $5,000 somewhere else. Now all finishes, are only $1,099, while supplies last. They're genuine bargains even at twice that price.

I saw that.... Looks like they are closing out the PB12-Plus/2...

They are not going to make them anymore....

They are definately not something to shake a stick at... They really put out chest pounding bass.. Just not able to be tuned as low as the new stuff out on the market... But in a smaller room, tuned to 16hz, will deffinately make someone go :eek::eek: :) Even in my huge room tuned to 20hz it literally freaks people out in my house...

I don't know if they are not going to make the PB12-Plus/2 anymore. I think they are just overstocked because of the new Ultra craze going on right now.

Will have to ask Tom.

I can't say that I'd miss the Plus/2 simply because the PB-13 is that impressive with a single driver :)

The Plus/2 is still a Daunting Product for its day... Had all these new subs come out earlier, I probably would have gone in a different direction... After tweaking my SMS-1 I remembered why I love this sub.. I just punches you in the gut hard !! Its capabilities in the 40-50hz range is thunderous. EQ is everything !! Get it right and you'll be amazed. It also be that I have a PB12-Plus in the same room, but They just pound....

I think the sound quality could be a touch better, which is why Im building my own... but People in my house after hearing the combo I have now, think Im insane for wanting more...

I try to tell them Im after better sound quality but they don't believe me...
