Finally bought a system..once last sub question

I finally decided on a HT system that will also be used about 30% of the time for music. I purchased a Polk csi5 center channel for $228 to my door and I'm purchasing a pair of rti 8's for $530 shipped top the door. So here is the question.

Right now, polk is giving me a $200 credit towards purchasing a sub. While I know that the rti8's need a sub to fill out the bass, I was really going to wait and buy an svs or hsu sub. but..there is that $200 credit..

So they basically have two subs that I could get.. stats below..

THe PSW110, that will cost me $50.
* bass-reflex (ported) cabinet design
* 100-watt RMS amplifier
* 10" front-firing driver
* frequency response 32-250 Hz
* continuously variable 60-160 Hz crossover
* phase switch
* auto on/off
* speaker-level, line-level, and unfiltered LFE inputs
* speaker-level output
* 14-5/16"W x 14-11/16"H x 17-1/2"D
* warranty: 5 years woofer, 3 years amplifier

OR the PSW 125 that will end up costing me $150
* bass-reflex (ported) cabinet design
* 150-watt RMS amplifier
* 12" front-firing driver
* frequency response 32-225 Hz
* continuously variable 60-160 Hz crossover
* phase switch
* auto on/off
* speaker-level, line-level, and unfiltered LFE inputs
* speaker-level output
* 16-1/4"W x 16-11/16"H x 20-7/16"D
* warranty: 5 years woofer, 3 years amplifier

It seems that the only diff is a bigger drive and a little more power..but what do I know.

You guys have any thoughts? Seems like a $50 sub is better than no sub at all...or is it? Do you think it will take away from the rti's?

THANKS so much, you forum members have been a great help!!

I would get the 50 buk one and sale it on ebay to go towards a SVS. Yes a bad sub is worse than no sub at all.

I like the look of those subs. I hadn't seen them before (but I don't shop for Polk subs). Some people like Polk subs, some people here firmly believe that they suck. My brother has an older Polk with two 12" drivers, and he was impressed by it. A friend of mine has a smaller, cheap Polk sub and is happy with it (I wasn't impressed, but all that matters is that he likes it).

So, to your question...would you really be saving $200 or wasting $50-$150? That is a good question. Would you have the opportunity to try one out and return it if you didn't like it? I found a few reviews at Polk's site (for both subs) and at Crutchfield (for the PSW125). People really seem to like the PSW125. I think for $150, it would be worth it.

Is this a credit that must be spent on Polk merchandise? Usually that's the way a credit works and whatever you don't use you lose. So if that is the case, why would you even consider getting the $50 sub?

If there will be no money out of pocket, get the best one they offer that will be covered by the credit. Then leave it in the new box and sell it on EBay or Craigslist. That will turn your credit into cash which you can then apply toward a better sub.

I agree with greg on the buying the $50 and ebaying it. I disagree on no sub being better though than a cheap one.

I'm with the $50.00 crowd. Selling it new you should come out ahead. As far as low prices go, Hsu has a sale on their STF-1 FOR $254.00, 15% OFF.

Good Luck.
