What $351, You have to be Shipping me!!!!!

In the quest for a decent set of loud speakers, I have been reading so many forum posts my eyes hurt. Taking advice, I drove to audition a bunch of speakers. Much to my dismay, it was much easier to tell the "good" speakers from the "REALLY good" speakers and I quickly realized that books shelve speakers were not going to do it for me. I auditioned a BUNCH of different polks that never really did it for me, some Totems that sounded nice but were too expensive, I liked the larger, floor standing Paradigms, until I learned the ones that didn't sound hollow to me were $1,700 a pair.

So after reading several good reviews of the Rocket RS850's and their similarity to the RS 760's I decided to try and purchase a pair of 760's. After all, they are on "sale" right now, everyone says they are beautifully finished, and even though I can't audition them, I could always send them back. So I pop them and a center channel into my shopping cart, put my visa info and in and WHAM!!
$356 shipping. THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS? Is someone carrying them here on a bicycle? I know they are heavy but that amounts to almost half of the cots of the 760's and pretty much puts them out of my price range.

Does it usually cost that much to ship a set of speakers? If it costs that much, why would anyone send them back if they weren't "thrilled" with them,, you would end up pissing away almost $700!

Perhaps I should go to Fry's and buy a set of infinity beta 50's and be done with it.

That's kind of what I thought, I feel kinda rooked actually. kind of like when you see a great price on something on -ebay only to see the shipping is 3 times what it should be.

You have to wonder who would spend $300 to ship a $800 speaker?

was that the only shipping option? I would call the mfg. and ask if there was a less expensive alternative.

Indeed. That does sound outrageous. Are you sure that wasn't overnight or something? I only ask because I once shipped floorstanding Boston Acoustics, each having individual boxes, cross country (VA to CA) for like $75...that was via FedEx Ground. Now, there's no way those weighed as much as the rockets, but it's gotta at least be in the ballpark. $356?! Yikes. You could put that $350 premium towards a pair of speakers purchased locally and get yourself something pretty nice.

Wow, that's crazy stupid! Both Aperion Audio and Axiom offers free shipping. Have you look into something from either of those two companies?

The weight of the item & the dimensions of the box will determine shipping costs as well as mileage & chosen mode of shipping, air vs ground & time of transit from door to door.

With each speaker weighing 94 lbs packed & each box being over 4ft tall the shipping quote sounds about right to me,allthough it does sound a little bit too high, like maybee $80 too high, i think you may have requested an elevated level of service above standard ground shipping.

A couple of questions, when selecting shipping options did you select UPS or Yellow freight,if you selected UPS that is the reason the cost is a bit too high,if you selected Yellow Freight what level of service did you select.

The level of service from Yellow Feight or UPS will drastically effect your price,if they unpack its extra,if they bring in the house its extra,if they take the empty pallett & plastic wrapping with them its extra.

The cheapest mode of shipping is to request that Yellow Freight drop ship your speakers at the nearest local airport & leave them on the pallett, doing that will easily knock $150 off your shipping quote, ive used that shipping method many times.

Are you located in the 'States or in Canada? That can have a tremendous difference. That seems too high though. Fed Ex is usually pretty good for heavy items like that.

I've heard that AV123's website shipping prices tend to be a little higher when you order online. If you call and talk to one of their reps the shipping charges tend to be a little bit lower. I inquired about shipping 850's and a 200 to Tucson,Az and it was $300 and about $15 lower to ship the 760's.

You should see the double boxes and creates they put their speakers in. You'd have to try to hurt them to have any shipping damage. (not that a forklift couldn't do the trick)
These creats add a lot of extra weight and sise to an already large and heavy item.

I paid $104.00 for shipping of four MB Quart 830 towers, one 330 center, and one NHT SW-12 powered sub. All were double boxed.

The towers weigh 51lbs each.
The center weighs 18lbs.
The sub weighs 60lbs.

282lbs total shipped for $104. (Fed-Ex)

(From the West Coast, to the East Coast)

I just placed an order from av123 for the following items:

Reference 1 monitor
Reference 100 center
X-Plosive sub

the total came to just under $1250 shipped.

If you add up the totals that's $1150 in speakers & sub and $100 in shipping. (I got a discount on the sub) I called in and shipping was $50 less than on the website for just the speakers, although my rep said that I would have a bit more in shipping for the sub since it will ship separate from the speakers as it hasn't been released yet.

Does anyone really believe the shipping is FREE with any speaker manufacturer?

I rather pay my own shiping that subsidize others returns.

Good luck which ever way u go!

PS-Call and get a custom shipping quote. If you are willing to p/u from your local Yellow u can save $20, or if u can have it delivered to a busines address.

This is why I didn't go with av123 actually.. prices on the speakers sound great until you realize the final price is 40% higher due to shipping. I'm sure shipping is worked into price when shipping is "free", but it doesn't cost $350 to send a set of towers
