Bookshelfs/monitors in $400 range?

How difficult would these be to drive well with a run of the mill receiver?
I don't know of any Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, Sony, or Harman Kardon receivers that are even rated at 4 ohms.

Very difficult unless you keep the volume at a fairly low level.
You will have no problem running the danas 2 channel with a run of the mill amp. You can always add a beefier amp later for an improvement in SQ, but most modern receivers will have no problem powering them. They are small monitors with 5" drivers, so no matter how much power you throw at them, they will never fill a large room with sound by themselves.

I would highly recommend the Usher S-520. I have not heard (or seen) anything better for $400 retail. These have similar specs to the danas (which I have not listened too yet) except they are 8 ohm.

I disagree due to room size alone.

A better idea would be to post what you have heard. There are plenty of $400 bookshelf speakers out there.

Ok guys, I've settled on the KEF iQ1s for a couple of reasons.. stated neutrality and pretty solid reviews, and price (this project is a birthday gift so I'm trying to save my folks some money if possible ). That, and they were pretty easily orderable online, unlike some of the other models. When the speakers and receiver arrive I'll post back here with my impressions. Thanks for all your input, its been great!:D

Well, I have heard quite a few monitor/bookshelf speakers, but not many at $400 retail. I've auditioned the Usher V601, Kef IQ3, NHT 3, Vienna Haydn, B&W 683 and the Revel M12. These all cost more than the $400 Ushers, but the sound and looks of the little S-520 in piano black kept me coming back. All of the speakers had their strengths and weaknesses, but the little Usher was very hard to beat and less expensive too (the Haydn's were excellent, but 3x the price). I also planned to use a sub, so that was a factor. There really aren't many $400 speakers available unless you go to Bestbuy or internet direct. The Polk RTi series is a great bang for the buck as is the Infinity Beta. I have not heard any of the internet direct brands, but the S-520 seems to review favorably on the Ascend forum.

Also, some 4 ohm speakers can have a more stable load than 8 ohm speakers. The impedance swings on an 8 ohm speaker may dip lower than a 4 ohm speaker at certain frequencies. We're not talking about running a pair of maggies on a run of the mill receiver. I would bet money that the Dana 630 would work fine with most receivers in 2 channel (not a HTIB receiver).

I would also keep an eye on audiogon for some von shwiekert VR-1's which can be found for a little over your budget. Very nice speaker.

I found the iQ1s at Amazon for $330 with free shipping. As I said it was partly a price driven decision, and I don't trust "BrandToyz", which seems to be the cheapest retailer for the 3s according to Froogle. We'll see when the 1s arrive, I can't wait! :)
