if i had an spl i assume i would match the DBs for all the speakers from my listening position but would i match the subs db also to the speakers, when i go through the speaker levels on the receiver the sub is so low i barely hear it. i guess the spl is the only way to tell if it matches up. there is no question the sub works but the test tone is low i barely hear it!!!!!

Some receivers have a -10dB attenuation of the LFE that needs to be changed to no attenuation. Then, set the amp level on the back of the sub to half way; then with internal test tones or a test DVD, increase the sub level to 2/3 dB as the meter is about that far off in the tone range. Test this setup. You can increase or decrease it afterwards to your preference to the intensity you prefer.

not sure if my receiver has this option to change the attenuation, i have the yamaha htr 5960. how do i find out???

Consult the manual or find it on line at Yamaha and see if that is one of the features in the setup menu. If not, it doesn't have it. Maybe it only comes with THX type receivers as I have seen at least one with that feature.

what gets me is that when i go into manual set up and run the test signals to each speaker the signal goes to around to each speaker but when i get to the boston pv 1000 sub i cant hear a thing!!!!! when i play dvds the sub is tight and has incredible lows. when i run the test set up nothing, or if i watch tv nothing.. i have run the auto set up, when i run the auto set up it does send the test signal that i can hear. any thoughts?

the sub level is set half way on the sub around 6 out of 12. if i turn it up between 8 or 12 then i get some lows while watching tv but this setting is way to high when i watch movies. on the receiver i ran the auto calibartion and it assigned the sub db on the receiver at -4.5 (thats on a scale of -10 to 10) i tried to adjust it up to around +5 on the receivers sub dp but when i play dvds it is way to high!!!!

On some receivers, you can set it to stereo and check the speaker assignments, and LFE. If the owners manual doesn't have instructions and charts explaining the different modes, speaker selections, etc, maybe a call to tech support.
Since most likely while you watch TV, it is in stereo and if the LFE or sub is not assigned, maybe that is why the low level, otherwise you should have more than what you are getting now. You should not have such a disparity between it and the other inputs.

Do you have digital cable service or standard analog? Digital may offer DD sound on some shows but not all. Yes, try that. Experiment with any and all modes to see if you get better bass out. Also try DD Pro Logic II/x and see what happens.
While you may not get as much as you do on movies or CDs, you should get more.
