Did you use a quick setup procedure?

Press the surround or DSP mode buttons on the remote control to see if the surround and center speakers activate. The receiver will not default to surround if Dolby Digital is introduced to it, it will remain in stereo until you change it to surround (on button press should do it).

If that doesn't work, go through the quick setup again and make sure you have the speakers setup correctly. It may prompt you at the end of the quick setup to save the settings, if you press exit the settings may not be retained that you just made. Make sure you press enter at the finish of the quick setup.:)

DVD and Receiver settings

First,
Verify that your DVD player's audio output is set to bitstream and not PCM. You need bitstream to get a 5.1 DD or DTS signal. If you DVD player is getting the 5.1 signal it will show 5 little speaker icons on the display and also should indicate DD or DTS.

If this is the case and you are still only getting sound from 2 channels, check the receiver setup and verify that the center, surrounds, and sub channels are "ON" or re-run the auto setup. Turn the Yamaha DSP mode to straight effects (no additional DSPs) until you have everything working.

i read about that in a diff thread, and considered it, (ill def give it a try) but all was good in the beginning. 2 channel didnt occur till later. would it just switch on its own after a couple hours of playing around??

Quick question: how much did you spend on those Monster Cables? If it was more than around $15 and you're still within the return period, you may want to save yourself some money: return them and pick up some monoprice.com HDMI cables. Same quality, but could save you $100 per cable depending on where you bought the monster cable from.

Now that would be a worthwhile endeavor to take it back and buy some more movies :D

Moster Cable HDMI

A not so audiophile friend of mine picked up two of the Monster HDMI cables for $90 each for the local big box store to go with his new Bose system. It was a sad day. :(

I think I'll pick up one of the $10-15 monprice HDMI cables for him for x-mas. He will think I spent a mint.

I just hate seeing someone do something so unneccessary as buy $100+ cables that they usually don't need. Especially since I was so close to being one of those people (thank you Audioholics!). I try not to be too intrusive with it, but when it comes to saving a few hundred dollars on cables, I just gotta speak up.

Yes, you should. Maybe the next soul you save will be just as appreciative as you are about saving that $$$. :D
If you stay quiet, the powerful marketing forces will prevail.

I'm always saddened when I go to my friend's house and see his dad watching a movie on the couch with his very nice Sony XBR LCoS tv and his Bose acoustimass thing (don't know the model but he paid $3000 for it). One day we were all watching a movie and he wanted to show off the Bose so he turned it up pretty loud and it just sounded like crap. Sound was breaking up and dialogue was muffled. Although he thought that it was the best sounding thing ever. Made me want to bring him to my house so that he could listen to my Mirage system which cost 1/3 of the price.
