Help....Yammy 661 Component output

hello everybody....i'm a newbie here with some set-up questions about my Yammy 661.

I have my A2 HD DVD player outputting 480i to match up right with my current Philips TV [to be upgraded soon]. I can use either S-video or component directly connected to the TV and works out fine. However, I thought let's try dvd component out to AVR then AVR component out to TV. No picture, just sound.....It goes the same with DVD S-video out to AVR and then AVR S-video out to TV.

Is there something that I am missing out I am better out directly hooking up the hd-dvd player to the tv?

Many receivers have assignable component video inputs which means you have to tell it which input selector goes with which component video input - just like you do for coax or optical digital audio connections.

Composite video and s-video are usually not assignable and those input jacks are directly labeled for each input selector. If you get no picture using s-video then make sure you are connected to the Monitor Out from the receiver to the TV.

Also make sure that you have switched the TV to the correct input.

I tried switching my TV from AV1, 2, S-video and component with no success. I haven't tried putting the s-video to monitor out though...

Are there any plus' to connecting s-video and or component video to my avr and then out to my tv? If I were to use HDMI then probably yes, right?

Convenient switching. With a single connection to the TV you never have to change the input on the TV.

I have the 661 and MDS is right. You need to make sure you've "assigned" the correct component input on the 661 to the one you're using for the A2. Unfortunately, it's not just "plug it in and go".

So "assigning" it would enable my yamaha to get video input from my A2 via component and then turn it around and output it to my TV via component also...?

I'm not quite sure I understood the concept of assigning in's and out's or rather how to do it...

There is only one output. The user's manual will have the appropriate information to guide you in the right direction and solve the problem.

Here's the concept:
If you look at say the DVD input on the back of the receiver there will be yellow composite and s-video inputs. Anything plugged in there will be active when you select the DVD input either on the receiver or via the remote.

But the component video inputs don't 'belong' to any particular input selector and can be assigned to any of them (with a few exceptions, notably Tuner, Phono, and any audio only inputs like Tape, CD, etc).

So if you want to select DVD to see the video from the dvd player and you connect the component cables to component video 1 you need to tell the receiver that component video 1 goes with the dvd selector. You'd do the same thing for a cable box that you want to select via Video 1 or whatever.

That's EXACTLY right.

Think of it this way; your 661 is simply a conduit for getting the signal from your player to the TV. But your 661 has multiple inputs that can be selected, so it needs to be told which ones are being used.

What the heck are you talking about; the binding posts? You can use banana plugs or spades if that's what you mean.

Yeah, I use banana plugs on all my speaker connections. Probably doesn't really make much difference, but it looks better and is easier to plug and unplug.

I just ordered solder type banana plugs from monoprice....i realized that's what I needed.....

i've got a lot of cables to clean up....

Hey, I'm not trying to belittle you, so don't get offended by this, but if you had trouble assigning the inputs on your receiver, do you really want to solder some connectors to your speaker wire?

These are the ones I used from Radio Shack. They're the screw on type. No soldering needed.

you can solder it or use it like a screw type according to a pdf file on the same page......if it doesn't work, I can always send it back right? or sell it....
