EMO might have taken a dump

I was recalibrating my system and when it went to the right speaker; all the sudden it was about 30db louder on that side. I turned it down, checked everything and then calibrated it again and it all came out fine. I was just listening to a CD and all the sudden the right side went dead. No blue light on that channel on the EMO and no sound.

uh oh, better give them a call and have them send out a replacement module... I guess that's one good thing about the MPS, if one channel goes, you don't have to replace the whole unit.

Yep; I just called and talked to Chris (I normally deal with Lonnie but he was on another line) After telling Chris the whole story he said "you better talk to Lonnie" so I am waiting on a call back.

Could anything else happen to me right now? Man, I am on one bad luck streak

I just moved it back so I could get to the business end of it and now it is working again. Something is not right!

Couple of things to try:
1. try sliding the amp module out and resliding it back in. Before sliding it back in, wipe the contact clean on the module and the amp side via a cotton swab. Make sure you unplug the amp of course
2. check the fuse in the amp module and replace it with the proper one if its blown

Well, it's working now so it's not a fuse. I have a feeling the chassis flexes too much and causes a contact issue. The exessive flex is caused by only having 3 modules in place and the back-plates firm up the chassis some but not like an entire module would. I would almost bet this is why EMO stopped selling the MPS-1 with less than 7 modules. I can lift the front of my amp just 1/2 inch and make the modules quit working. All of this doesnt explain the increased DBs when I was calibrating though.

The likely reason the output increased momentarily was because it was disconnected from the rails and the relay may not have closed so the capacitors where being depleted. I can't explain the output increase, that could be a regulatory issue. So it may be just the contact problem as Gene mentioned. (this is all just a big guess, but it sorta makes sense)

Why are you considering doing this? That's a lot of extra money just for a few more watts per channel... I doubt there would even be an audible difference.

Amp Chassis

The exessive flex is caused by only having 3 modules in place and the back-plates firm up the chassis some but not like an entire module would. I would almost bet this is why EMO stopped selling the MPS-1 with less than 7 modules. I can lift the front of my amp just 1/2 inch and make the modules quit working. All of this doesnt explain the increased DBs when I was calibrating though.

If the back of the MPS-1 is accessible, consider spacing your amp modules in the following configuration:
blank, amp module, blank, amp module, balnk, amp module, blank.

This configuration should make the chassis more rigid than provide better circulation than having 3 modules next to each other and 4 blank slots.

If that doesn't work consistantly, then negociate a trade in for the 5 channel x 200 Watt amp they will have out soon or a discount on a couple more amp modules.

Ok. Lonnie said it was an optical isolator issue. When using a 12v trigger the modules are turned on via the optical isolator, since this one was fried, it turned on via the audio signal. The increased DB during the calibration was caused by the AVR cranking up the volume for the channel that wasnt working. When the "sick" module kicked on after it read an audio signal the AVR auto cal had that side cranked way up.

The soluion is sending it back(free shipping) and they will test it and either fix it or send a new one with a 24 hour turn around
