Hi guys,
I have read the basic tutorial in the sticky, but I still don't really understand.

I connect the receiver and the DVD player and then the DVD player to the TV?

I thought all connection from DVD player, etc etc goes to receiver then receiver is the only one that connect to the TV?

So, if I want to install my HT, I connect the HDMI connection from the DVD player to the TV, then the audio (opt/coax) "out" from DVD player to audio "in" in the receiver, and proceed to connect all the speakers cable from receiver to the DVD player? (everything "out" from DVD, and "in" in the receiver)

Then for the speakers, I would connect all the speakers "out" and into "in" in the receiver?

then wouldn't there be 2 "outs" going into 1 "in"?

OR

speakers "out" to receivers' "in" then receivers' "out" to DVD player "in"?

wow, I will need soo many more cables..... I even got confused just by typing up this thread...

Help is greatly appreciated. Sorry, if the question sounds stupid guys, but I still need some explanation even after reading the tutorial article...

Forget ALL about what you just typed.
It is incorrect, and I am sure the tutorial did not say it that way.

You are hooking up 4 items
AVR (receiver)
speakers
DVD player
and TV.

It is VERY simple,
Just hook up the Speakers directly to AVR.
Hook DVD player (HDMI) to AVR in.
Hook TV to the AVRs HDMI out.
That is all.

So you need 2 HDMI cables. (probably a short 3' cable for DVD player to AVR, and whatever lenght from AVR to TV)
And the correct amount of speaker cables (5.1 I am assuming) so 5 speaker cables, and 1 RCA cable for the sub.
Done. ;)

Omg, thank you very much, i was so confused.....

so it is true what I thought, everything goes through receiver then from receiver to TV. Because in one of the diagram for Universal DVD player, the receiver connects from the receiver to DVD player and then to the TV.

so the correct one is DVD out to AVR in, then from AVR out to TV in

if the order I do it is not exactly "everything to receiver to TV" will it affect the performance? I would guess so huh?

so the receiver is like the mediator right?

Yes, it is just a switching device.

Granted there are 'purists', like myself, that do prefer the longer way of hooking items up (however, this is mainly for longer runs, and for people hooking up a projector usually).
But to not confuse you, I will stay away from how it would be hooked up.
(as well, it would require a DVD player (or HD player) with analog out preferably)

Oh ok, so the one I read on the tutorial is the alternative way you are talking about.

Does it make the video/audio better?

Does it make the video/audio better?
Debatable.;) As well specifics could apply.:)

I will not say I see a difference (or hear), but being a purist in that respect, I do prefer the longer way to hook items up.
(maybe, LOL, I am not sold on a 'magic' cable)

Don't get me wrong, I use HDMI cables (when I am lazy)

If you are not a A/V phile (specifically video, in my case), then I would say chances are, you will not hear or see a difference without VERY close scrutinization.

Haha, I see...I don't think I am on that level yet.

Thanks for all your help, Gasman
